Katedralna Lock in Poznań

Katedralna Lock, also known as Dom Schleuse, is a historic part of the 19th-century Poznań Fortress on the Cybina River. The building stands beside Cathedral Island, and a glass footbridge connects it with the Porta Posnania heritage centre. The building now houses Galeria Śluza, a venue for temporary exhibitions.

History of the lock and crossing

Katedralna Lock was built over the Cybina between 1834 and 1839 as part of the fortifications of Cathedral Island. The complex consisted of two bridgeheads joined by a nine-span masonry bridge. The bridge gave Prussian troops a crossing over the river, while the lock gates could raise the water level and create a flooded area in front of the fortress if the city was threatened. The lock was never used in military action.

Galeria Śluza and the footbridge

After its revitalisation, the building became home to Galeria Śluza, managed by the Poznań Heritage Centre. Its interiors host temporary exhibitions, while a free audio trail leads visitors through six stops explaining the history of the site. The glass footbridge over the Cybina links the lock with Porta Posnania, making it easy to combine this visit with the multimedia story of Cathedral Island.

Visitor information

Galeria Śluza is at Dziekańska 2 in Poznań. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00; it is closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
