Cathedral Lock in Poznań (Galeria Śluza)

The Cathedral Lock is a nearly 200-year-old piece of the Prussian Poznań Fortress on the River Cybina, right next to Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island. This former fortified weir, now linked by a glass footbridge to the Gate of Poznań heritage centre, houses Galeria Śluza, with free temporary exhibitions and an audio trail about the building's history. It is a short, free stop that shows Ostrów Tumski from a lesser-known, military angle.

History: a weir that never flooded anything

After 1815 Poznań once again became part of Prussia, and its position on the road to Berlin and close to the Russian border led the Prussian authorities to build one of the largest fortresses in the state here. The lock was built in 1834–1839 and later incorporated into the Cathedral Citadel protecting Ostrów Tumski. It consisted of two fortified abutments linked by a brick bridge about 56 m long with nine vaulted spans.

Above all, though, it was a weir: vertical grooves in the bridge piers held wooden stop-logs that could be lowered into the river. The dammed-up Cybina was meant to flood the ground in front of the fortress in case of a siege. The lock was never used in combat. In the early 1920s the city demolished the bridge and the eastern abutment; the western one survives – a brick building covered with an earth embankment, with casemates below and halls on the ground floor.

From homes to gallery

After the Second World War two Poznań families lived inside the lock, and it housed workshops of a locksmith, a foundryman and a goldsmith, and for decades storerooms of the cathedral and the Archdiocesan Museum. The neglected building, whitewashed and divided by partition walls, was thoroughly restored, and since 2014 it has been home to Galeria Śluza, run by the Poznań Heritage Centre.

What to see

• Brick walls and vaults used for temporary exhibitions – until 28 February 2027 the show "Everything Was Within Reach. A History of the Rataje Housing Estates" marks 60 years since construction of the Rataje district began, with texts in Polish and English and activities for children.
• Fortification details: barred embrasures, rings for securing gun carriages, the original wooden main gate and a horse trough from the second half of the 19th century.
• The glass footbridge over the Cybina to the Gate of Poznań.
• A free audio trail with six stops and QR codes – about the weir, the artillery positions and life inside the old fort.

Opening hours and access

The gallery is open Tuesday–Friday 9:00–18:00 and Saturday–Sunday 10:00–19:00, closed on Mondays; admission is free (as of October 2026). Address: ul. Dziekańska 2, Poznań. Level -1 is reachable by stairs only. Allow 30–45 minutes.

Bring your phone and headphones – the audio trail is the best way to understand what you are looking at. Afterwards, cross the footbridge to the Gate of Poznań, with its multimedia exhibition on the origins of the Polish state, then walk a few minutes to Poznań Cathedral. Across the Cybina lies the Śródka district with its well-known 3D mural.
