Brama Poznania ICHOT

Brama Poznania ("BRAH-mah poz-NAH-nyah," meaning Gate of Poznań) is an interactive heritage center telling the story of Ostrów Tumski, the river island where both Poznań and the early Polish state began. Instead of display cases, it uses sound, light and multimedia to explain more than a thousand years of history. It's the ideal first stop before you explore Cathedral Island — and one of the most family-friendly attractions in the city.

Why Ostrów Tumski matters

Poznań, in western Poland between Berlin and Warsaw (about 2.5–3 hours by train from either), is one of the country's oldest cities. In the 10th century the Piast dukes built a stronghold on Ostrów Tumski, and in 968 the first Polish bishopric was established here. Poland's first rulers are buried in the cathedral next door. Brama Poznania puts all of this into context before you walk the island itself.

The building

Opened in May 2014, the center was designed by Arkadiusz Emerla and Maciej Wojda of the Kraków studio Ad Artis. It's a striking, almost windowless concrete block cantilevered over the Cybina River, split by a glazed slit aimed straight at the cathedral. A 63-meter glass footbridge links it to the Cathedral Lock (Śluza Katedralna), part of the 19th-century Prussian fortress, which now hosts temporary exhibitions. The building was nominated for the EU's Mies van der Rohe Award.

What you'll see

The exhibition (about 1,076 m²) has no original artifacts. Instead, four multimedia halls tell the story:

• Stronghold — the origins of the settlement and the Piast fortress
• Water — the symbolism of the Baptism of Poland in 966
• Gold — the island from the 16th to the 19th century
• Stained Glass — recent history

You visit with an audio guide; the exhibition is translated into several foreign languages — ask at the desk for yours. Groups of up to 30 enter every 20 minutes. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

• Hours: Tue–Fri 9:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 10:00–19:00, closed Mondays; last entry one hour before closing. Exhibition hours stay the same in winter.
• Closed: November 1, December 24–26 and December 31, 2026.
• Tickets: adult 35 PLN, reduced 29 PLN, family 75 PLN (up to 5 people, max. 2 adults). Cheaper "Happy Hours" tickets are also offered.
• Cathedral Island combined ticket (Brama Poznania plus the Archdiocesan Museum and Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve within 10 days): 49 PLN, reduced 36 PLN, family 109 PLN.
• A guide for a group costs 220 PLN in a foreign language (book 7 days ahead).

The center also offers an audio tour of the island: Tue–Fri 9:00–16:00 and Sat–Sun 10:00–17:00 in season, but weekends only, 10:00–16:00, in winter.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially with kids or if you know little about Polish history — it makes the cathedral and the island far more meaningful. The building is largely accessible to visitors with disabilities. Dogs are allowed only if carried or in a bag.

How to get there

Take a tram or bus to Rondo Śródka, then walk a few minutes along Śródka Street. From the cathedral, cross the footbridge over the Cybina. Drivers can park on Gdańska or Bydgoska Street; paid parking applies on weekdays 8:00–18:00.
