Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve in Poznań

Under a shelter on the cathedral island of Ostrów Tumski in Poznań, right beside the cathedral, you can see the original cross-section of a 10th-century stronghold rampart built in the times of Mieszko I. This is the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve, a branch of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań opened in 2012 and an important stop on the Piast Trail.

What to see

The heart of the exhibition is a large excavation with the preserved rampart cross-section. The construction was highly complex — according to estimates, the oaks used to build it were felled across an area stretching some 20 km around the stronghold. Multimedia presentations tell the story of the fortifications, the excavations and everyday life in the early Middle Ages, at the beginnings of the Polish state.

The context

Ostrów Tumski is the cradle of Poznań, and the reserve lets you see a relic of the early Piast stronghold without having to imagine it — the walls of the excavation speak for themselves. The name "genius loci", the spirit of the place, fits here almost literally.

Practical notes

Address: ul. ks. Ignacego Posadzego 3. The reserve is closed on Mondays; from Tuesday to Thursday it is open 10:00–16:00, on Fridays and Saturdays 10:00–18:00, and on Sundays 10:00–15:00. Tickets: PLN 8 regular, PLN 4 reduced, PLN 10 family — and admission is free on Sundays. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
