Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve in Poznań

Ulica ks. Posadzego on Poznań's Ostrów Tumski runs along the crest of a stronghold rampart from the time of Mieszko I, Poland's first historical ruler: its structure begins about a metre below the cobbles and reaches almost six metres down. At the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve you can go down to that rampart and see its cross-section with your own eyes. The oak beams, after a thousand years in damp ground, have turned into black oak.

What this place is

The reserve is a branch of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań and stands a few steps from the cathedral at ul. ks. Ignacego Posadzego 3. It opened on 30 June 2012 on a 1,002 m² plot donated by the archdiocese. The pavilion was designed by the Toya Design studio, and its western brick façade uses changing brick bonds meant to evoke the stratigraphic layers of an excavation. Construction cost about PLN 9.7 million, most of it covered by EU funds.

The visitor route

• Cinema room: the visit starts with a film, in a popular-science version for adults and an adventure version for children.
• Bishop Lubrański's wall: under a glass floor you can see the foundations of defensive walls from the 1520s, built of glacial boulders set in lime mortar, with three arches of late Gothic brick.
• The Poznań cross-section: the main hall with the original excavation preserved in situ. The eastern face, 16 × 6 m, shows the slope of the 10th-century rampart cut by traces of later walls; the southern face, 7 × 6 m, shows remains of timber grids and beams. At the bottom lie oak box structures, a piece of woven matting and a stone footing.
• Finds from Ostrów Tumski: since 2021 a showcase has displayed more than 150 objects from excavations at the cathedral, the palatium, Zagórze and Śródka.
• Generation 966: the lowest room, over five metres below street level, with holographic portraits of people buried in an 11th-century cemetery at Śródka, their faces reconstructed.

Did you know?

• In the street outside stands "Przekrój P(p)oznania" ("Cross-section of Poznań / of Knowledge"), an installation by Łukasz Gruszczyński made of rusted steel with oak panels from local excavations. Its shape echoes the stronghold's ramparts, and it is lit up at night.
• The reserve has won awards including the Izabella Grand Prix in 2021 and 2024 and the Jan Baptysta Quadro Prize in 2021.

Practical information

• Opening hours: Tue–Thu 10:00–16:00, Fri–Sat 10:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–15:00, closed on Mondays. Last entry 30 minutes before closing.
• Tickets: standard PLN 20, reduced PLN 15, family PLN 50 (up to two adults and four children). A combined ticket with Górka Palace costs PLN 30. Admission to the exhibitions is free on Sundays.

Tripto tip

Allow about an hour. If you come on a Sunday, take advantage of free entry but expect more visitors. Combine the reserve with the cathedral and the Porta Posnania heritage centre (Brama Poznania) across the Cybina river: its ticket office sells a combined ticket that also covers Genius Loci and the Lubrański Academy. As you leave, look down at ul. Posadzego and remember you are walking on top of a thousand-year-old rampart.
