Poznań Cathedral

Poznań Cathedral on Cathedral Island is Poland’s oldest cathedral and a place connected with the beginnings of the Polish state. The first Polish bishopric was established here in 968, and the island became a centre of power for the early Piasts. A visit includes the Gothic basilica, underground remains of earlier churches and the tombs of Poland’s first rulers.

History and key places

The cathedral was rebuilt many times after fires and wartime destruction, while its present form largely restores the Gothic character. The Golden Chapel contains the mausoleum of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave. In the crypts, see remains of earlier buildings, Piast tombs and a 10th-century baptismal font. The cathedral remains an active church, and the story that Mieszko was baptised here should be treated as a strong tradition rather than an undisputed fact.

Crypts and viewing tower

Entry to the cathedral itself is free, while the crypts and viewing tower require tickets. In the 2026 season, the tower is open from 1 June; the crypts and tourist service have seasonal hours, so check current prices and availability on the cathedral website. The tower looks over Cathedral Island and Poznań.

Planning your visit

Do not visit during Masses, services or concerts. Dress appropriately and keep quiet. Combine the cathedral with Cathedral Island, the Brama Poznania centre, the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve and nearby Śródka. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the cathedral and crypts, and at least half a day for the island and museums.
