Poznań Cathedral

Poznań Cathedral — the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) — is the oldest cathedral in Poland and one of the birthplaces of the Polish state. The first Polish bishopric was founded here in 968, and beneath the floor lie the remains of 10th-century churches and graves believed to belong to Poland's first rulers. Together with the glittering Golden Chapel, it is the single most important historic site in Poznań.

Where it is and why it matters

Poznań is in western Poland, roughly halfway between Berlin and Warsaw — about 2.5–3 hours by train from either, with Poznań-Ławica airport about 7 km from the center. Polish history traditionally begins in 966 with the baptism of Duke Mieszko I, and two years later a bishopric was set up on this river island, inside the ducal stronghold. Kraków's Wawel Cathedral is better known abroad, but Poznań's is older: this is where the story of Christian Poland, and of the Piast dynasty, starts.

A thousand years of rebuilding

The first cathedral, a three-aisled basilica about 40 m long, went up in the 980s; its first bishop was Jordan. After a Bohemian raid in 1038–1039 it was rebuilt in Romanesque style, and from the 13th to the early 15th century it was transformed into a Gothic church with an ambulatory and a ring of chapels. Fires in 1622 and 1772 brought Baroque and Neoclassical changes.

The worst blow came in February 1945, during the battle for Poznań's Citadel, when artillery fire set the cathedral ablaze and gutted the interior — only the chapels survived. Rebuilt between 1946 and 1956 in its Gothic form, it gave archaeologists the chance to uncover the foundations of the earlier churches. Pope John XXIII made it a minor basilica in 1962.

What to see

• Golden Chapel — the mausoleum of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, Poland's first king, created in 1836–1841 to a Byzantine-inspired design by Franciszek Lanci, with gilding, mosaics, a neo-Gothic sarcophagus and bronze statues of both rulers.
• The crypts — an archaeological reserve with fragments of the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque cathedrals, remains of tombs attributed to the first Piasts and a 10th-century basin sometimes linked to baptism (it may also have been used to mix lime).
• The chapels — twelve in all, including the royal Chapel of St. Stanislaus and the Górka Chapel with a Renaissance family tomb of 1574.
• Bronze tomb slabs — five late-Gothic slabs, the largest such set in Poland; looted in WWII, they were found in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and returned in 1999.
• Viewing tower — panoramic views over Cathedral Island and the city.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

• Tourist visits: weekdays 9:00–16:00, both in season (March 1–November 15) and in winter.
• Crypts and tower: only March 1 to November 15 — weekdays 9:00–16:00, Sundays 14:00–18:00 (unless there are extra services). In 2026 the tower reopened on June 1. From mid-November until the end of February, plan on visiting the church only.
• Prayer: the Blessed Sacrament chapel is open daily, 7:00–19:00 in summer and 7:00–16:00 in winter.
• No sightseeing during Mass, services or concerts.
• Tickets (from the tourist information point inside): crypts 10 PLN (reduced 8, family 25); tower 14 PLN (reduced 12, family 40).

Is it worth visiting? Tips for your visit

Absolutely — even if you only have one day in Poznań. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the cathedral, Golden Chapel and crypts, plus half an hour for the tower. The best time is a weekday morning between March and mid-November, when everything is open. Dress modestly, keep your voice down, and remember it's a working church. How to get there

The cathedral is on Ostrów Tumski, about 1.5 km east of the Old Market Square — a 20-minute walk. Trams stop at Katedra and Rondo Śródka. Drivers can use the Katedra Ostrów Tumski car park on Dziekańska Street; paid parking applies on weekdays.
