Poznań, Greater Poland
Ostrów Tumski (say "OSS-troof TOOM-skee"), Poznań's Cathedral Island, is where the story of Poland began. On this island between the Warta and Cybina rivers stood the stronghold of Mieszko I, the first historical ruler of Poland; here the country's first bishopric was founded in 968, and its oldest cathedral still holds traces of the earliest kings' tombs. Today it is a peaceful, leafy district and one of the most meaningful things to do in Poznań.
Poland officially dates its beginnings to 966, when Mieszko I accepted Christianity, and Poznań's island stronghold was one of his main seats. Settlement here goes back to the 8th–9th centuries, and in the 10th century the Piast dynasty built a major fortified town on the island. Since 1999, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a stone palace with a chapel beneath today's Church of the Virgin Mary, probably built for Mieszko's Czech wife, Dobrawa.
In 968 a bishopric was established in Poznań under Bishop Jordan, making the cathedral here the oldest in Poland. Its crypts preserve remains of the graves of Mieszko I and his son Bolesław the Brave (Chrobry), the first crowned king of Poland, together with a 10th-century baptismal basin. The cathedral burned during the battle for Poznań in February 1945 and was rebuilt in Gothic form after the war.
Allow 1.5–2 hours for a walk around the island and the cathedral, or half a day if you add the Gate of Poznań, the crypts, the tower and the archaeological reserve. Start at the Gate of Poznań for context, then cross the footbridge onto the island. The center also offers audio walks around Ostrów Tumski and has a certified tourist information desk.
The cathedral is an active church: no sightseeing during Mass, services or concerts, and dress respectfully. The Gate of Poznań is dog-friendly (small dogs must be carried in the exhibition).
Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN).

Ostrów Tumski is about 1 km (0.6 miles) east of the Old Market Square — a 15–20 minute walk. The Bolesław Chrobry Bridge is being rebuilt, but one side always stays open for pedestrians; the Berdychowo footbridge is an alternative. Trams run to Rondo Śródka, a few minutes' walk from the Gate of Poznań.
Drivers can use parking on ul. Gdańska next to the Gate of Poznań, the Katedra car park at ul. Dziekańska 2, or ul. Bydgoska. Parking in the area is paid Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
Poznań itself is an easy trip: about 2.5–3 hours by train from Warsaw, and well connected to Berlin. After your visit, wander into the neighboring Śródka district for coffee and its famous colorful mural.
