Knights Hall at Jasna Góra

In the southern wing of the Jasna Góra monastery operates a chamber that once served as a royal throne room. The Knights Hall, built in 1647–1649, was formerly called the Hall of Disputes and still plays a representative role — monastic ceremonies and meetings with the highest state dignitaries take place here.

Mid-17th-century architecture

Originally the hall was a separate building, running parallel to the Chapel of Our Lady and linked to it by passages on both floors. The interior is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, resting on pairs of pilasters with Corinthian capitals decorated with putti, birds and griffins, added in the 1690s. Below lies the Rosary Chapel, and in the corner of the hall there is the monastery gate with an elaborate portal.

Paintings from the monastery's history

In the lunettes hang nine oil paintings from the 17th century by anonymous painters: the founding of the monastery by Władysław of Opole, the Hussite raid of 1430, the thanksgiving of Władysław IV for Chocim (1621), the homage of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Jan Kazimierz (1661), the wedding of Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki and Eleonora of Habsburg (1670), the handing of Żółkiewski's sabre to Sobieski before Vienna (1683) or the Swedish siege of 1655. Under the vault military, school and trade-union banners are displayed, and on the walls there are tablets: with the text of Jan Kazimierz's Lwów vows and one dedicated to Henryk Sienkiewicz, unveiled on 25 August 1969.

A hall of state

The chamber hosted events of national rank: in 1656–1661 the Senate held its sessions here, and in 1661 Jan Kazimierz received Cossack and Tsarist envoys here, using the hall as a throne room.

In practice

The hall is visited as part of the monastery route: in season (March–October) from 9:00 to 17:00, off season until 16:00. Entry leads through a grand staircase with portraits of Polish kings; free-will donations apply, and a guided tour costs PLN 10 (reduced PLN 5).
