Jasna Góra Golgotha

Jasna Góra’s Golgotha is a cycle of 18 paintings by Jerzy Duda-Gracz forming a contemporary Stations of the Cross at the Jasna Góra monastery in Częstochowa. The paintings are displayed on the upper level of the entrance section of the Chapel of Our Lady. The artist donated the cycle to the sanctuary, and the work was blessed on 8 September 2001.

A contemporary Stations of the Cross

Duda-Gracz set the Passion scenes within recognisable Polish everyday life, combining a religious subject with expressive painting. This is not a neutral illustration of the biblical story: strong distortions, symbols and contrasts invite reflection on suffering, guilt and hope. The visit can be moving even for people unfamiliar with the artist’s work.

How to visit

Golgotha is reached through the Jasna Góra complex, so it is worth combining it with the Chapel of Our Lady, the basilica, the Treasury and other votive collections. Opening arrangements, admission rules and guided-tour options may depend on the sanctuary calendar and group size; check current notices from Jasna Góra and its Information Centre before travelling.

Important information

Golgotha is part of an active sanctuary, not a separate museum with its own independent entrance. In Jasna Góra’s museum areas, photography and filming require specific permission from the monastery authorities and the curator of the votive collections. Dress respectfully and follow the staff’s instructions during services and ceremonies.
