Jasna Góra Tower in Częstochowa

The tower over one hundred metres tall is the most recognisable element of the monastery on Jasna Góra and one of the trademarks of Częstochowa. The white structure can be seen from afar, also by pilgrims heading for the sanctuary that the Pauline Fathers have run since 1382. A viewing terrace set roughly halfway up the building is reached after climbing 516 steps.

A history written in the structure

The lower part of the tower was built in the 18th century, and the upper section was added in the 20th century. This layered history reflects the fate of the whole monastery: from the times of Władysław Opolczyk and the bringing of the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa to the hill, the monastic complex grew along with the standing of the place, designated a Historic Monument in 1994. The defence of the Jasna Góra fortress in 1655, when the siege of the far stronger Swedish forces was repelled under Prior Augustyn Kordecki, also entered legend.

A panorama of the town and the Jura

From the platform you can view the panorama of Częstochowa and its surroundings — in good visibility it reaches the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland with the ruins of the castle in Olsztyn. A large clock installed on the tower plays recognisable melodies, and their sound accompanies the daily rhythm of the town.

In practice

The tower is open to visitors: from March to October between 9:00 and 17:00, and from November to February between 9:00 and 16:00. It is best to combine the visit with a tour of the sanctuary — after descending, leave time for the Chapel of the Miraculous Image and the monastery cloisters. Remember that this is a living place of worship: keep quiet and follow the guidance of the Paulines.
