Jasna Góra Tower in Częstochowa

The Jasna Góra Tower in Częstochowa (pronounced roughly yahs-nah GOO-rah, chen-stoh-HOH-vah) is the 106.3 m bell tower of Poland's most important pilgrimage shrine, home of the Black Madonna icon. From April to November you can climb it for a bird's-eye view of the Pauline monastery and the city. If you are visiting Jasna Góra anyway, the climb adds a memorable perspective on a place that millions of pilgrims know only from ground level.

Where it is and why it matters

Częstochowa lies in southern Poland, about 75 km north of Katowice and roughly 130 km northwest of Kraków. Trains take around an hour from Katowice and about two hours from Kraków, which makes the shrine a feasible day trip. Jasna Góra (“Bright Hill”) has been run by the Pauline Fathers since 1382. In 1655 the fortified monastery famously held out against a Swedish siege, an episode that turned it into a national symbol, and in 1994 the complex was declared a Monument of History, one of Poland's highest heritage designations.

A tower rebuilt after a fireworks fire

The first tower went up in 1617–1625, with a brick shaft and a wooden, copper-clad top. On the night of August 14–15, 1900, fireworks launched from the illuminated tower during the Feast of the Assumption set that wooden top on fire. Instead of rebuilding in timber, a commission that included architects Stefan Szyller and Józef Pius Dziekoński chose stone and steel. The new tower, about 17 m taller than before, was blessed on August 15, 1906, in front of roughly 300,000 people. Its lower section still dates from the 18th century.

What to look for

• Statues of saints on the corners of the third gallery and copper figures on the uppermost balustrade.
• The Pauline raven: a gilded raven holding a loaf of bread sits beneath the cross on the spire, with a wingspan of 1.7 m. It recalls the legend of St. Paul the Hermit, who was fed by a raven.
• The clock and carillon, installed in 1906 with bells from Mechelen in Belgium. Marian tunes ring out every quarter of an hour.
• The view: the monastery roofs and ramparts below, and the long, straight Holy Virgin Mary Avenue (Aleja NMP) running toward downtown.

A fun fact: surveys in 1988 found that the tower's core leans about 78 cm off vertical.

Is it worth the climb?

There are 519 steps from the base to the highest accessible level, and there is no elevator. Stairs are narrow and steep, so the tower is not suitable for wheelchair users, and it is a real workout for anyone with a fear of heights or bad knees. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the climb and the view. Combine it with the Chapel of the Miraculous Image, the basilica, the Knights' Hall and the Treasury. Remember this is an active place of worship: dress modestly, keep quiet in the chapels, and expect huge crowds around August 15 and August 26.

Opening hours and practical tips

As of October 2026:

• Tower: April to the end of November, daily 8:00 am–4:00 pm; closed December to March (it may open on sunny March weekends). Access depends on the weather.
• Ramparts: daily 6:00 am–6:30 pm year-round.
• Museum areas: 9:00 am–5:00 pm (March–October), 9:00 am–4:00 pm (November–February).

How to get there

From Częstochowa's main train station, walk about 25–30 minutes, mostly along Aleja NMP, with the tower in view the whole way. Drivers can use the parking lots by the shrine, which fill quickly on major feast days.
