Częstochowa, Silesian
The Match Production Museum in Częstochowa (say "chen-stoh-HOH-vah") is the only museum of its kind in Poland: a historic match factory, the oldest on Polish soil, with its 1920s–30s production line still in place. It is a must for fans of industrial heritage and gritty, authentic factory interiors – but be aware that the site is in a fragile state, with production stopped years ago and the buildings in need of repair. Always call ahead before you go.
The factory is at Ogrodowa 68 in central Częstochowa, southern Poland, a few minutes' walk from the railway station and the Holy Family Cathedral. Częstochowa is about 70 km north of Katowice (around an hour by train) and roughly two hours by train from Kraków. Most visitors combine it with the Jasna Góra monastery.
Two entrepreneurs from Wrocław, Karol von Gehlig and Julian Huch, founded the factory in 1881, and production began in 1882 – the first match factory in what is now Poland. It changed hands several times and in the interwar years belonged to the Polish match monopoly.
A fire on June 16, 1913, was caught on camera; the footage is considered one of the oldest surviving Polish documentary films. After another fire in 1930 the plant was re-equipped with machines from the German firm Durlach. The best-known product was the Black Cat brand. The museum opened inside the working factory in 2002, production ended in 2010, and the site was then listed as a historic monument. Financial trouble followed, including failed attempts by bailiffs to sell the property.
Tours are guided and last about one hour.
For industrial-heritage lovers, yes – it is a rare, unpolished place. But as of October 2026 the operator's website (zapalki.pl) is under reconstruction, and published opening hours and prices are out of date. A visitor report from November 2025 describes guided tours available by phone appointment, but also peeling plaster and parts of the building without electricity or heating, so dress warmly in winter. Contact the museum before visiting: tel. +48 34 324 12 10 or kontakt@zapalki.pl.
According to the Silesian Industrial Monuments Route, tours are in Polish only, payment is cash only (in Polish zloty, PLN), parking is free and the site is not wheelchair accessible.
