Władysław Biegański Bench in Częstochowa

On the representative Alley of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the very centre of Częstochowa, a doctor sits on a bench — a book and a stethoscope lie beside him. This is a monument to Dr Władysław Biegański, the man who at the turn of the 20th century turned the Częstochowa hospital into one of the region's significant medical centres.

The city's physician

Biegański was born in 1857 in Grabów nad Prosną and from 1883 practised in Częstochowa: he ran a private practice, worked as a hospital, railway and factory physician, and until 1907 headed the municipal hospital, which he reorganised and expanded. He also studied logic and the theory of science, publishing works at the borderland of medicine and philosophy. He died in Częstochowa in 1917.

A bench opposite the former hospital

The sculpture was unveiled on 23 June 2008 on the initiative of the Częstochowa Medical Society, with the city's support. It stands opposite the site of the former municipal hospital, next to the public library bearing Biegański's name. The bronze is the work of the Kraków sculptor Wojciech Pondel, creator of the nearby Perepeczko bench. Jasna Góra is only 1.5 km away — the monument is easy to include in a stroll along the city's main promenade.
