Landmarks
Częstochowa, Silesian
Holy Virgin Mary Avenue (Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny, known locally simply as "Aleje") is the grand central boulevard of Częstochowa (say "chen-stoh-HOH-vah"), Poland's great pilgrimage city. Some 44 m wide, with a tree-lined pedestrian promenade between two carriageways, it runs straight to the hilltop monastery of Jasna Góra, home of the famous Black Madonna icon. Walking its length is the classic way to arrive at the shrine, just as pilgrims have done for two centuries.
Częstochowa lies in southern Poland, roughly 70 km north of Katowice (about an hour by train) and around two hours by train from Kraków; fast trains also link it with Warsaw. Katowice Airport (Pyrzowice) is the nearest international airport. Częstochowa railway station is a few minutes' walk from the middle section of the avenue. If you drive, use the paid parking zone downtown or the large lots by Jasna Góra.
The avenue was laid out in 1818 to connect two separate towns – Old Częstochowa and New Częstochowa – which merged on August 19, 1826. Chestnut trees were planted along it in 1823, and classicist townhouses soon lined the route. During the Nazi occupation it was renamed Marien-Allee and, from January 1942, Adolf-Hitler-Allee; the Polish name returned after the war. The upper section was redesigned with decorative paving in 2005–2007.
Locals divide the roughly 1.5 km (1 mile) street into three parts:
Yes – it is free, open 24/7 and the most pleasant approach to Jasna Góra. The walk takes 30–40 minutes; allow 1.5–2 hours with a coffee and the Town Hall museum. Fall foliage and evening lighting are especially photogenic. In August, ahead of the major Marian feast days, walking pilgrimages stream down the central promenade – memorable, but crowded. The boulevard is flat and wide, easy with strollers and wheelchairs.
Town Hall museum (as of October 2026): Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 am–3:30 pm, Wednesday 11 am–5:30 pm, Saturday–Sunday 11 am–5 pm, closed Mondays; last entry 30 minutes before closing. Tickets cost 15 PLN (reduced 10 PLN), and permanent exhibitions are free on Wednesdays.
