Museum in Częstochowa

The Częstochowa Museum (Muzeum Częstochowskie; say "chen-sto-HO-vah") is the city museum of Częstochowa, the southern Polish city best known for the Jasna Góra Monastery and its Black Madonna icon. Its flagship branch is the 19th-century Town Hall with a viewing tower, standing on the grand avenue that leads up to Jasna Góra. Other branches range from a Polish painting gallery to an underground iron-ore mining trail and a burial ground nearly 3,000 years old, making it a good counterpoint to a pilgrimage visit.

The Town Hall and city history

The Town Hall was built in 1826–1834 after the old town and the new town of Częstochowa were merged into one city. It has housed the museum since 1967, and a 2006 renovation added an elevator, accessibility features and a public viewing tower with views over the city. The permanent exhibition, "Częstochowa – A Look into the Past," traces the history of the city and region from prehistoric times to the early 20th century, alongside temporary shows.

• Good Art Gallery (Galeria Dobrej Sztuki, 47 NMP Avenue): an 1875 Classicist townhouse once home to Orthodox clergy, showing Polish art of the 19th and 20th centuries since 2013.
• Exhibition Pavilion and Iron Ore Mining Museum in Staszic Park: pavilions built for a 1909 national exhibition of industry and agriculture, plus an underground trail created in 1974–1976 and renovated in 2008; entries every 30 minutes.
• Archaeological Reserve in Raków: a pavilion over a Lusatian culture cemetery from about 750–550 BC, discovered in 1955, with 85 burials on display.
• Halina Poświatowska Museum (a beloved 20th-century Polish poet), the Museum of Częstochowa Jews and the Old Town Hall.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

Town Hall, Good Art Gallery, Exhibition Pavilion and Mining Museum:

• Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 9:00 am–3:30 pm
• Wednesday: 11:00 am–5:30 pm
• Saturday–Sunday: 11:00 am–5:00 pm; closed Mondays and on public holidays. Last entry 30 minutes before closing.

Admission to the Town Hall or Mining Museum is 15 PLN (reduced 10 PLN); smaller branches cost 10 PLN. A one-day ticket for all open branches is 25 PLN (reduced 16 PLN, family 45 PLN). Permanent exhibitions are free on Wednesdays. Smaller branches have shorter hours.

How to plan your visit

Allow about an hour for the Town Hall and tower, or half a day if you add the gallery and the Staszic Park sites. The Town Hall is wheelchair accessible. English-language information may be limited; guided tours must be booked at least 7 days ahead, so ask about English-speaking guides when you book.

Getting there

Częstochowa has direct trains from Warsaw, Kraków and Katowice, and the Town Hall sits in the city center, a short walk from the main station. From there, the tree-lined NMP Avenue leads straight up to Jasna Góra; Staszic Park and its pavilions lie right below the monastery, so the museum fits easily into a day of sightseeing.
