Lubiąż, Lower Silesian
Lubiąż Abbey (roughly "LOO-byonzh") is one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe and a masterpiece of Silesian Baroque: its facade stretches about 223 m (730 ft) and the buildings hold more than 300 rooms. Set above the Oder River about 54 km (34 miles) northwest of Wrocław, it was left to decay for decades and is now slowly being restored. The contrast between the dazzling Princes' Hall and the bare, echoing corridors makes it one of the most unusual day trips in southwestern Poland.
The abbey stands in the village of Lubiąż (Wołów municipality), Lower Silesia. Wrocław, with its international airport, is the natural base; driving is by far the easiest option, taking about an hour. The address is Plac Klasztorny 1, Lubiąż.
The first Cistercian monks arrived on August 16, 1163, from Pforta in Thuringia, invited by Duke Bolesław I the Tall. The abbey prospered, founding daughter houses including Mogiła near Kraków (1222) and Henryków (1227), and in the 14th century was a center of Silesian learning. The Hussite Wars of 1428–1432 began a long decline.
Its golden age came after the Thirty Years' War. Between 1681 and 1739 the monks built the abbot's palace, a new monastery, brewery, bakery and hospital, and gave the Gothic Church of Our Lady a Baroque interior. The painter Michael Willmann, the "Silesian Rembrandt," worked here for many years, alongside Christian Bentum, Felix Anton Scheffler and sculptor Franz Joseph Mangoldt.
Prussia dissolved the abbey in 1810 and removed 471 paintings, including 63 by Willmann. The buildings became a psychiatric hospital in 1823; during World War II they housed war production using forced labor, and in spring 1944 the remaining Willmann paintings were taken away. A Soviet military hospital occupied the site from 1945 to 1948, after which it was largely abandoned. The Lubiąż Foundation, set up in 1989, has led the restoration ever since.
The standard guided tour covers:
A few times a year, extended tours open the attics and cellars ("From the Attic to the Cellar," most recently on September 5–6, 2026). After roughly 30 years of conservation, the monastery library reopened in 2026 and can be seen on special "Library Weekends," held in May and July this year. Walk around the outside too: the facade has more than 600 windows, and the walled abbey hill also holds a gatehouse, a former hospital, a barn, a chancery, a carriage house and a brewery with a bakery — reminders that the abbey was once a self-sufficient town of its own.
Open daily: October 1 to March 31, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. (last entry 2 p.m.); April 1 to September 30, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.). Guided tours leave every hour on the hour. Tickets cost 40 PLN (Polish złoty), reduced 30 PLN, guide included — cash only. Only groups of 20 or more need to book. Tours are in Polish; on October 5, 7, 9, 12–13 and 15, 2026, the Summer Refectory and former church are closed for filming.
Absolutely, if you love Baroque architecture or atmospheric ruins. The buildings are unheated, so bring a warm layer outside summer. A tour takes about an hour; allow up to two with a walk around the outside to take in the vast facade. Some sections involve stairs. In July the abbey hosts the Slot Art Festival, and concerts and night tours run through the year; in May 2026, for example, a Chopin Recitals concert was held in the Princes' Hall.
Who will enjoy it most? Architecture and history buffs, photographers and anyone curious about Central Europe's turbulent past — the abbey's story runs from medieval monks through Prussian secularization and World War II to post-communist rescue. Younger kids may find an hour in cold halls long, so plan a break outside. Remember to bring cash, as cards aren't accepted at the ticket desk.
