St Andrew's Church in Środa Śląska

The outer walls of St Andrew's are still those of a late-Romanesque basilica from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries — one of the oldest buildings in Środa Śląska. Above them rises a Gothic chancel of 1378–1388 with a vault attributed to master Klaus Parler, and beside it stands a 30-metre bell tower from which, on a clear day, you can reportedly see as far as Śnieżka. The church was first mentioned in 1233.

History: Romanesque basilica, Gothic and the Reformation

The original church was a three-aisled brick basilica, closed at the east by three apses and covered with a timber ceiling. In 1248, during fighting between the sons of Henry the Pious, the church burned. According to one account, Duke Bolesław the Bald of Legnica had 500 townspeople who supported Henry III the White burned within its walls. The nave was rebuilt by the end of the 13th century.

In 1378–1388 the parish priest sold the parish village of Popowice to pay for a rebuilding, but the money only stretched to a new Gothic chancel. Fourteen years later the bell tower was completed. In the 16th century, when many townspeople embraced Luther's teaching, Protestants took over the church; it returned permanently to Catholics in the second half of the 17th century, after the Thirty Years' War. Around 1830 a western section was added. Restoration in 1946–1948 and 1958–1959 uncovered remains of the Romanesque building. Since 1950 the parish has been run by the Salesians.

What to see

• The Romanesque outer walls — the clearest trace of the basilica from around 1200.
• The chancel of 1378–1388 with its net vault, attributed to Klaus Parler.
• Three baroque altars from the early 18th century and a pulpit of 1677.
• Late-Gothic cupboards in the sacristy, one of them dated 1513.
• Tomb slabs on the outer walls — including those of Margaretha Salisch (d. 1559), Anna Chrysolida von Saurma and her husband Wolf Heinrich von Klüx, with the arms of Silesian families.

The viewing tower

The Gothic bell tower beside the church is about 30 metres high and was built around 1400. In 2023 a viewing point was opened at the top as part of a summer art gallery: climbing the tower itself was free, while the viewing terrace was paid for at the gallery attendant's desk on the top floor. From above you can see Środa's old town and, in good visibility, Wrocław's Sky Tower and Śnieżka. The viewpoint operated seasonally, so check current opening times in town before you come.

The church is an active parish run by the Salesians, so the interior is easiest to see before or after Mass. Allow 30–45 minutes for the church and a walk round the walls with their tomb slabs, and a good two hours if you add the tower and a stroll to the Gothic town hall with its Regional Museum.
