Things to do in Lublin: castle frescoes, Old Town gates and day trips
Lublin sits on the old route between Poland and the lands to its east, and it shows. The castle chapel is a Gothic building painted inside with Byzantine-Ruthenian frescoes finished in 1418; the 1569 Union of Lublin, which joined Poland and Lithuania into one Commonwealth, was agreed at a parliament held here; and for centuries the city was one of the great centres of Jewish life in Europe, until the German occupiers destroyed the Jewish quarter below the castle. The compact Old Town, with its two medieval gates, has been a Polish Historic Monument since 2007.

Morning: the castle and its chapel
Book the chapel for an early slot, when it is quietest, then climb the keep and see one gallery of the National Museum. On Mondays the galleries are closed but the chapel and tower are open.
Late morning: Grodzka Gate
Walk down the steps from the castle hill to the Grodzka Gate. If a guided slot fits, the exhibition inside explains the Jewish town that stood around you before the war; reserve ahead, as groups are small.

Midday: Market Square and the cellars
Circle the Crown Tribunal, then go below ground on the Lublin Underground Route. In winter there is one weekday entry for individual visitors at 2 pm; at weekends tours also run at noon and 4 pm.

Afternoon: Dominican basilica and cathedral

Underground route and churches
The cellar tour, the Dominican basilica and the cathedral. The Trinitarian Tower next to the cathedral has a terrace about 40 m up, but outside the main season it may take groups only, so check first.

The site is large and mostly outdoors: allow at least two to three hours and dress warmly. The only entrance is from Droga Męczenników Majdanka; closed on Mondays. Guides in languages other than Polish must be booked.

Getting there
By train: Warsaw to Lublin takes about two hours. Lublin Główny station is roughly 2 km from the Old Town — a short bus or trolleybus ride.
By air: Lublin Airport is in Świdnik, about 10 km east of the centre. Its railway station is right by the terminal, and trains reach Lublin Główny in around 15 minutes.
By car: the city is served by the S17 and S12 expressways. Most of the Old Town is closed to traffic, so park in the paid parking zone or at plac Zamkowy below the castle (charges Mon–Fri 8 am–6 pm).
Getting around: the Old Town, the castle and Krakowskie Przedmieście are best on foot. City buses reach Majdanek (about 4 km south-east, stop “Majdanek”) and the open-air museum (about 5 km north-west).
Day trips: Kazimierz Dolny is about 60 km by road, roughly an hour's drive; by public transport, take the train to Puławy and a local bus from there. Kozłówka is easiest by car.
When to go
Summer is festival season: Night of Culture in June fills the streets with installations, and the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów street-art and circus festival takes over the Old Town in late July. Lublin will be a European Capital of Culture in 2029.
Winter 2026/27: from October to March the castle galleries open Tue–Thu and Sun 9 am–5 pm, Fri–Sat until 6 pm (closed Mondays); the chapel opens daily from 9 am and the keep 9 am–7 pm. Majdanek opens Tue–Sun 9 am–4 pm from November to March and is closed 24–31 December. The open-air museum opens 9 am–3 pm from November to March. Between November and April the underground route has a single weekday tour for individual visitors, at 2 pm.
Seasonal closures: after the 2025 season the Trinitarian Tower closed to individual visitors until May; no notice for 2026/27 had been published by early October 2026. The rooftop terraces of the Centre for the Meeting of Cultures closed from 1 November last season, though the building and its events run all year. Kozłówka Palace is open until 29 November in 2026.
Mondays: the castle galleries, the Kraków Gate museum and Majdanek are closed. The Holy Trinity Chapel, the castle keep and the underground route are open.

How do I get from Lublin Airport to the city centre?
Take the train from the station by the terminal: it reaches Lublin Główny in about 15 minutes. From there the Old Town is about 2 km away by bus, trolleybus or taxi.
Is it free to visit Majdanek?
Yes. Entry to the grounds and all exhibitions of the State Museum at Majdanek is free. Guided tours and the car park are paid. The museum does not recommend visits for children under 14, and you can explore on your own with its free mobile app.
