Landmarks
Lublin
The Kraków Gate (Brama Krakowska) is the landmark everyone associates with Lublin: a 14th-century Gothic city gate topped with a Baroque dome, standing where the main street, Krakowskie Przedmieście, meets the Old Town. Inside is the Museum of the History of Lublin, and from its top floor, about 36 m (118 ft) above the street, you get a fine view over the Old Town roofs. It's the natural starting point for any walk around Lublin.
Lublin (say "LOO-bleen") is the largest city in eastern Poland, about 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Warsaw, roughly two hours by direct train. The gate stands on plac Łokietka 3, opposite the New Town Hall, at the end of the pedestrian Krakowskie Przedmieście. From Lublin's main train station it's a short ride on city buses or trolleybuses. If you drive, use the paid parking zone; much of the Old Town is closed to traffic.
The gate was built after a Tatar raid in 1341, when King Casimir the Great surrounded Lublin with defensive walls. It was one of only two gates in the walls – the other is the Grodzka Gate – and was reached by a drawbridge over a moat that was filled in during the 17th century. The gate was raised in the 15th century, rebuilt after fires in 1515 and 1575, and given a barbican in the mid-16th century. In 1782 it received its Baroque dome bearing the monogram of King Stanisław August (SAR – Stanislaus Augustus Rex). A clock has kept time here since the mid-16th century.
After heavy damage in World War II, the gate was restored in 1959. Since 1979 it has housed the Museum of the History of Lublin, a branch of the National Museum in Lublin.
The exhibition "History of the City" follows Lublin from early medieval settlement to 1944, floor by floor:
The museum is open Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Tickets cost 10 PLN (reduced 8 PLN); a guided tour costs 70 PLN per group plus tickets. The branch is also covered by the "Lublin Castle + branches" combined ticket (50 PLN, reduced 40, sold at the castle ticket desk). Photography is allowed for private use, without flash.
Yes, especially if you want quick context before exploring the Old Town – an hour is enough for the exhibition and the view. Even if Polish history is new to you, the historic views of the city, the portraits and the panorama from the top make it worthwhile. The upper floors are reached by stairs.
Walk through the gate along Bramowa Street to the Market Square and the Crown Tribunal, where the Lublin Underground Route begins. The Trinitarian Tower with its viewing terrace is a few steps away, and at the other end of the Old Town you'll find the Grodzka Gate and Lublin Castle.
