Castles
Lublin
Lublin Castle is the single best place to start exploring Lublin (say "LOO-bleen"), the largest city in eastern Poland. On one hilltop you'll find a 13th-century Romanesque tower, a Gothic royal chapel covered in Byzantine-style frescoes finished in 1418, and a white Neo-Gothic building that served as a prison for 128 years. Today it's the main seat of the National Museum in Lublin, and it's the place where the 1569 Union of Lublin was agreed.
Lublin lies in eastern Poland, about 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Warsaw; direct trains from Warsaw take roughly two hours, and Lublin Airport in nearby Świdnik has its own rail link to the city. The castle stands on a hill at Zamkowa 9, right next to the Old Town, about a five-minute walk from the Grodzka Gate. City buses stop at "Muzeum Narodowe – Zamek" on Castle Square, from where a tall flight of stairs climbs to the museum. If you'd rather avoid the stairs, Zamkowa Street rises more gently (on cobbles) from Tysiąclecia Avenue. There's a paid parking lot on Castle Square (fees Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., free otherwise), but it's sometimes closed for events.
A wooden stronghold stood here in the 12th century. The stone keep (donjon) followed in the second half of the 13th century, and King Casimir the Great built a brick castle with a royal chapel in the 14th century. In 1418 King Władysław Jagiełło had the chapel painted by Ruthenian artists, creating a rare blend of Western Gothic architecture and Eastern Orthodox art.
Around 1520 King Sigismund the Old turned the castle into a Renaissance residence. In 1569 the parliament meeting here sealed the Union of Lublin, joining Poland and Lithuania into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of Europe's largest states of the era. Wars in the 17th century left the castle in ruins; only the chapel and the keep survived.
The building you see today went up in 1824–1826 as a prison. It held January Uprising insurgents under Russian rule, around 40,000 people during the German occupation of 1939–1944 (about 300 prisoners were murdered here on July 22, 1944), and some 35,000 people during the Stalinist years up to 1954. The museum officially opened in the castle on July 21, 1956.
The museum runs a winter season from October to March:
From April to September everything opens an hour longer. Tickets cost 20 PLN (reduced 15) for the permanent exhibitions, 20 PLN (15) for the chapel and 10 PLN (8) for the keep; a combined ticket for all three is 40 PLN (30), sold at the ticket desk only. Children under 7 go free. Buy at the desk, from the machine in the courtyard or online at bilety.mnwl.pl. The chapel admits a maximum of 60 visitors per hour, so on weekends it's worth booking a time slot ahead. Photography is allowed for private use, without flash or tripods.
Yes – it's the top sight in Lublin. Plan 2–3 hours for the chapel, the tower and a gallery or two. Start with your chapel slot, then climb the keep for the view over the Old Town, and finish in the galleries. The museum has elevators, a platform lift and accessible restrooms, and the chapel can be reached by elevator; the keep is not accessible for wheelchair users. Audio description, induction loops and a free museum app (Android and iOS) are available.
Walk down through the Grodzka Gate into the Old Town and take the Lublin Underground Route beneath the market square, then climb the Trinitarian Tower for a second panorama. The Majdanek memorial site lies about 4 km (2.5 miles) southeast and is easy to reach by city bus.
