Lublin
The Lublin Open-Air Village Museum (Muzeum Wsi Lubelskiej) is one of the largest open-air museums in Poland: around 27 hectares (67 acres) of wooden cottages, manor houses, windmills, an Eastern Catholic church and a reconstructed prewar small town, all moved here from across the Lublin region. It's the most relaxing of the things to do in Lublin, especially with kids, and in fall the colors make it particularly photogenic.
Lublin is the main city of eastern Poland, about 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Warsaw, roughly two hours by direct train. The museum is at al. Warszawska 96 in the Sławin district, about 5 km (3 miles) northwest of the Old Town on the road to Warsaw. City buses 18, 20, 30 and 37 stop nearby; drivers can approach from al. Warszawska. The UMCS Botanical Garden is right next door.
The museum began in 1960 as a folk architecture department and became independent on January 1, 1970. The first building to be moved here was a windmill from Zygmuntów in 1976, and the first sector opened on September 27, 1979. In 2013 the museum completed a reconstructed prewar small town (miasteczko), a reminder of the multicultural market towns that once dotted the region.
The grounds are divided into sectors representing parts of the region – the Lublin Upland, Roztocze, the Vistula area, Podlasie and the Bug River area – plus a manor sector and the small town. Highlights:
Film fans may recognize the scenery from Polish movies such as "Battle of Warsaw 1920" and "Volhynia".
Last entry is one hour before closing. The museum is closed on November 1, December 24–31, January 1 and 6 and at Easter. The website is inconsistent about Monday opening from November to March, so call ahead if you plan a winter Monday visit. Admission costs 30 PLN (reduced 20 PLN); children under 7 enter free. Tickets can also be bought online. Last winter (2025/26) prices were temporarily reduced; check whether that applies in 2026/27. On the weekly free-admission day the building interiors are closed. Guided tours in English for groups must be booked at least a week ahead.
Yes, if you have half a day: allow 2–3 hours. Paths are partly grass and gravel and the site is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes. In winter, come early – the days are short and some interiors may be closed. Families will enjoy the farm animals and the furnished cottage interiors, and the museum's event calendar regularly features craft workshops, folk music and demonstrations of old rural customs – in October 2026, for example, a traditional cabbage-shredding gathering. Combine the visit with the neighboring botanical garden for a full green day out.
