The Centre for the Meeting of Cultures (Centrum Spotkania Kultur, CSK) is Lublin's largest arts venue and one of the most striking modern buildings in eastern Poland. Visitors come mainly for its free rooftop viewing terraces, a green roof with urban beehives and a wildflower meadow overlooking the city center. In the evening it's worth coming back for a concert, show or film – CSK has an opera hall, a chamber stage and a cinema.
Lublin (say "LOO-bleen") is the largest city in eastern Poland, about 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Warsaw, roughly two hours by direct train. CSK stands on Plac Teatralny 1, on Racławickie Avenue, about 1.3 km (0.8 mile) west of the Kraków Gate – a pleasant 15–20-minute walk along the main street, Krakowskie Przedmieście. Many bus and trolleybus lines run along Racławickie Avenue.
Work on a huge theater and concert hall began here in 1974, designed by Stanisław Bieńkuński, but the project stalled and for decades locals called the unfinished concrete shell the "Theater Under Construction." In 2012 the unused part was demolished to make way for a modern cultural center, and construction was completed on November 22, 2015, together with the new Theater Square in front of the building.
Today the building houses an Opera Hall laid out as an amphitheater, a chamber hall, a music club, a cinema and temporary exhibition galleries. CSK runs concerts, theater, festivals, workshops and film screenings – some of them free. When the terraces are closed for winter, the events program is the best reason to drop in; the schedule and tickets are on the CSK website.
The terraces occupy two roof levels (+4 and +5) and are free; up to 150 people can be on them at once. Expect:
House rules ban high heels, bikes, scooters, alcohol and smoking; children under 13 must be with an adult. Wheelchair users can use marked routes on level +4, and the building has elevators and accessible restrooms.
The terraces are seasonal, with hours posted on csklublin.pl. Last year they closed from November 1, 2025, for weather and safety reasons, with reopening announced for spring, so expect a similar winter closure in 2026/27 – check before visiting from November. The building and its events run all year; the box office is open Tuesday–Friday noon–7 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday 2–7 p.m., and an hour before each ticketed event. Guided building tours for groups of 10–25 can be booked (10 PLN, reduced 8 PLN).
Yes, for a free city view and a look at contemporary Polish architecture, especially combined with the historic Saxon Garden across the avenue. Allow 30–45 minutes for the terraces, then walk down Krakowskie Przedmieście to the Old Town.
