St. Lawrence Church in Gorysławice

In Gorysławice, right next to Wiślica in the Ponidzie region, stands the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence — a stone, oriented temple from 1535, built through the efforts of the local parish priest, Father Józef Dałowicz. In the past these were the outskirts of Wiślica, below the town's Busko Gate.

Centuries of wood and stone

The earlier, wooden church was mentioned around 1326 — when it served as the parish church — and again in 1430. The present masonry church was completed in 1535, and since the end of the 18th century it has served as a branch of the Wiślica parish. The nave is almost square and the presbytery slightly narrower, closed with a beautiful net vault.

Furnishings

The high altar is early Baroque and depicts St. Stephen and the church's patron, St. Lawrence. On the rainbow beam stand Gothic figures of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist, with a Baroque figure of Christ between them. Beneath the church lies a burial crypt, and by the temple survives a small churchyard cemetery with 19th-century tombstones.

In practice

The church stands by the main road no. 776, on the Lesser Poland Way of St. James from Sandomierz to Kraków and on the blue hiking trail from Pińczów to Wiślica. It makes a convenient stop while exploring Ponidzie — the monuments of Wiślica are a stone's throw away.
