Wiślica Hillfort

Wiślica Hillfort, also called the Hillfort in the Meadows, is an archaeological site about 400 metres south-east of Wiślica town centre. It stands among meadows near an old channel of the Nida River. The earthworks and slopes outline a former defensive settlement. This is a short, worthwhile stop for travellers interested in archaeology and the Ponidzie region.

Early medieval hillfort

Research identified several phases of development. The oldest rampart had an outer facing of stones laid without mortar, known as a dry-stone wall. Excavations also found around twenty semi-sunken houses, a well and a water cistern. The remains can be difficult to read in the field, so prepare with the National Heritage Board entry or visit the Archaeological Museum in Wiślica, where a model and multimedia explain the site.

Access and nearby sights

The hillfort is not an open-air museum with a complete reconstruction or ticketed exhibition. It is generally accessible and cared for by the municipality, but paths and visibility depend on weather, grass and current works. Do not expect staff or fixed opening hours. Use available routes, protect the ramparts and check municipal notices before travelling; sturdy shoes help after rain. Combine the walk with Wiślica’s collegiate basilica, Długosz House and the museum’s underground route. Allow 30–60 minutes.
