The Bell Tower in Wiślica

The Bell Tower in Wiślica belongs to the historic complex beside the Basilica of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was founded by Jan Długosz and built around 1460–1470. The four-storey structure has stone lower sections and brick upper storeys, making it a distinctive feature of the small town and a natural complement to a visit to the basilica.

Late-Gothic form and heraldic frieze

The most interesting exterior detail is a frieze with coats of arms linked to the Crown and Lithuania as well as noble families. The tower recalls Wiślica’s importance in the late Middle Ages and Jan Długosz’s role as a founder of local buildings. It was damaged by later fires and wartime events, and its present appearance reflects rebuilding and restoration.

The tower stands beside the basilica, near Długosz House and other remains of the medieval complex. It is best treated as one stop on a short heritage walk rather than a separate attraction for several hours. The visit helps explain the relationship between the church, the former canons’ house and the bell tower founded by the same patron.

Wiślica is in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, about 15 km south of Busko-Zdrój. The tower is on Kościelna Street, by the basilica. Access arrangements and the areas open to visitors may change, so confirm entry with the basilica administrator or local tourist information before travelling. Visiting may involve stairs; combine it with the basilica and Długosz House.
