Holy Cross Church

The Church of the Holy Cross in Brzeg is a single-nave Baroque church whose greatest feature is the illusionistic polychrome decoration on its vaults and walls. It stands on Pańska Street, close to the Silesian Piasts’ Castle and the historic centre. Visit it especially for the scale and ambition of its painted interior.

History and architecture

The church was built for the Jesuits between 1734 and 1739 to a design by Józef Frisch. The order had arrived in Brzeg in 1681, and the project formed part of the Catholic revival in the town. Between 1739 and 1745, the Jesuit Jan Kuben decorated the interior. The towers were raised and the façade plastered at a later date. The church has one nave, side chapels, galleries and a vault designed around scenes connected with the mystery of the Holy Cross.

What to see

Jan Kuben’s frescoes create an illusion of extended architecture and draw the eye towards the vault. Their programme includes scenes related to the Holy Cross, the history of the Jesuit order and saints. Also look for the Baroque and Rococo pulpit and the details of the altars and chapels. The church combines well with a visit to the castle and a walk through Brzeg’s market square.
