Brzeg Castle

Brzeg Castle (say "BZHEG"), nicknamed "the Silesian Wawel", is one of the finest Renaissance residences in Central Europe, set on the Oder River about 45 km southeast of Wrocław. It is famous for its richly carved gatehouse lined with statues of princes and for an arcaded courtyard reminiscent of Kraków's royal castle. Today it houses the Museum of the Silesian Piasts, the only Polish museum devoted to this branch of the country's first royal dynasty, and it is open all year round.

History of Brzeg Castle

Brzeg first appears in records in 1234, and a document from 1235 mentions a ducal court that probably stood on the site of today's castle. Around 1300 a free-standing last-resort defensive tower was built, later called the Lions' Tower after the lion sculptures on its top. From 1342 until the Piast line died out in 1675, the castle was the permanent residence of the dukes of Brzeg. As early as the 14th century Duke Louis I began collecting art here, along with one of the largest secular libraries of the Middle Ages on Polish lands.

Duke Frederick II began rebuilding the Gothic castle in Renaissance style in the 1530s – a portal dated 1536 survives. His son George II and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg (Hohenzollern) completed the arcaded wings and the showpiece gatehouse. In 1688 the chronicler Friedrich Lucae described Brzeg as one of the most remarkable Renaissance residences in this part of Europe. The neighboring Church of St. Hedwig became the burial place of the dukes of Brzeg and Legnica.

After the death of the last Piast, George William, in 1675, the collections were scattered. In 1741, during the First Silesian War, Prussian troops of Frederick the Great bombarded the town and wrecked the castle, which then served as a military storehouse and even an inn. The town bought it in 1924 and opened the first exhibition here in 1930. After 1945 a Polish museum was organized, renamed the Museum of the Silesian Piasts in 1965, and in 1966–1990 the castle was comprehensively rebuilt. Since 2019 it has been a Historic Monument of Poland.

What to see

• The gatehouse – a Renaissance masterpiece: statues of George II and Barbara above the arch, coats of arms held by armored knights, and above them two rows of busts of Polish kings and Piast dukes. View it from plac Zamkowy, ideally in afternoon sun.
• The arcaded courtyard – three stories of galleries that recall the courtyard of Kraków's Wawel Castle.
• Permanent exhibitions: the Silesian Piasts and their traditions, "Painted History of Poland", a cycle of twelve paintings of the life of Moses by Giovanni Pinotti (1545), Silesian art of the 15th–18th centuries on loan from the National Museum in Wrocław, and an exhibition on Poland's former eastern borderlands.
• The Lions' Tower, the oldest surviving part of the complex.

Opening hours (as of October 2026)

• Tuesday–Sunday: 10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; ticket office 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; closed Mondays.
• Wednesdays are free for all visitors.
• The museum is open all year with no winter break. During special events one floor may be closed, with a cheaper ticket.

• Standard PLN 35, reduced PLN 20 for all exhibitions; PLN 20/15 if one floor is closed.
• PLN 1 for children over 7 and students up to age 26; children under 7 free.

How to get to Brzeg from Wrocław

Brzeg is on the main Wrocław–Opole railway line, so the train is the easiest option; the castle is within walking distance of the station. By car, take the A4 motorway from Wrocław (Brzeg exit) or national road 94. Wrocław has the nearest international airport. Address: pl. Zamkowy 1, in the town center.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – the gatehouse alone is one of the most spectacular Renaissance facades in Poland, and the museum is rarely crowded. It makes an easy half-day trip from Wrocław, and you can add the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas and the Renaissance town hall on the market square.
