St Nicholas Church in Brzeg

St Nicholas Church in Brzeg is one of Silesia’s largest Gothic churches. Built between 1370 and 1417, it carries a complex history of religious change, wartime destruction, neglect and post-war rebuilding.

What survived

The sacristy contains Gothic wall paintings from around 1450, including the Crucifixion, the Mass of St Gregory and the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand. The church also preserves stone epitaphs of Brzeg burghers from the 16th and early 17th centuries.

Rebuilt from destruction

The church was destroyed by fire in 1945. Reconstruction began in 1958 and continued until 1967. The present building is therefore both a medieval monument and a record of the decision to rebuild rather than leave it as a ruin.

Practical information

The church is at 9 Jana Pawła II Street and remains active. Interior access depends on services; check parish arrangements before visiting.
