Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in Brzeg

By the Oder, on Młynów Square, stands the oldest church of Brzeg — the church of Sts. Peter and Paul, mentioned as early as 1285. Raised by the Franciscans, over the centuries it changed so profoundly that for a long time it served no religious purpose at all.

Arsenal, warehouse and furniture shop

In 1582, after Lutheranism had spread and the monks were expelled, the church was turned into an arsenal. It later served as a warehouse, a fire station and even a furniture shop. The most precious element of the Gothic building remains the net vault of the main nave, which served as a model for other churches of Lower Silesia.

Flood and slow rescue

In 1997 the wave of the millennium flood brought down the tower, destroying part of the presbytery. Renovation began in 2001, and since 2003 the owner has been the Wrocław archdiocese, which secured 1.7 million PLN for the works in 2013. So far the roof has been repaired; the rest of the structure still awaits the completion of work.

In practice

The interior is closed to visitors — a sign on the church warns of the risk of collapse. The building is best admired from the outside, on one walk that takes in the market square, the church of St. Nicholas and the Piast castle, all within a few hundred metres.
