Protestant Church and Tower in Ostróda

The Protestant Church in Ostróda is a Neo-Gothic brick building from 1907–1909, designed by Berlin architect Oskar Hossfeld. It stands on a slope above the old centre and Lake Drwęckie, while its distinctive double-helmeted tower is one of the town’s landmarks. A visit combines architecture, local religious history and views over Ostróda.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has three aisles, a transept and a pseudo-hall form inspired by Early Gothic architecture. Inside are wooden galleries, an altar combined with a pulpit, Neo-Gothic details and an organ by the Wittek company of Elbląg. The building is shared by Methodist and Evangelical Lutheran communities, part of its post-war history.

The viewing tower

The tower is not automatically open whenever the church is open. When the viewpoint operates, the climb involves about 105 steps; visitors can see the pendulum clock mechanism and bells along the way. The top looks over Ostróda and Lake Drwęckie. Confirm current opening arrangements and visiting dates with the parish or organiser.

Practical information

The church is on Sienkiewicza Street near the centre. It remains an active place of worship, so visit the interior outside services and be respectful. Allow about 45–90 minutes for the church and tower, if open. The visit combines well with a lakeside walk and Ostróda’s old town.
