Former Lutheran Church in Olsztynek

The Gothic church in the centre of Olsztynek burned at least three times, lost its vault in 1914 and was almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War. Yet it still stands – one of the oldest buildings in town and, in summer, the exhibition hall of the Museum of Folk Architecture. Right behind it, in a former tower of the town walls, Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongowiusz was born in 1764 – a pastor who defended the Polish language and culture in Masuria.

History: a church that was part of the walls

The church was built in the mid-14th century and is recorded as a parish seat in 1359. It had a single nave, no tower and no separate chancel, on a rectangular plan of about 31 × 11 m. The lower parts of the walls were built of fieldstone, the upper parts of brick. Surrounded by a stone wall, it formed part of the town's defences.

In 1685 a fire destroyed it completely, and the rebuilding of 1690–1691 gave it a Baroque character. A first tower was added in 1710; a few decades later it was pulled down, and in 1796 the present one went up. In 1804 the church burned again in a town fire, and in 1880 the tower received a spire. In 1914, during fighting with Russian troops, the vault was destroyed, and in 1933 the church was thoroughly remodelled. In 1945 fire consumed the roof, the entire interior and the upper part of the tower.

The exhibition hall today

The ruins were not rebuilt until 1974–1977, and the church was never returned to religious use – the building was given over to cultural purposes and in 1985 became part of the Museum of Folk Architecture. Since then it has hosted temporary exhibitions on many themes. As rebuilt, it is a long, low brick building with a whitewashed porch on the south side and an unassuming tower.

What to see

• The fieldstone walls in the lower part of the building – the easiest medieval feature to spot, next to a pointed-arch portal.
• The tower of 1796, rebuilt after the damage of 1945.
• Mrongowiusz House in the former wall tower right behind the church: from the second half of the 16th century it housed a Lutheran school, with the schoolmaster (rector) living upstairs.

The exhibition hall and Mrongowiusz House (ul. Zamkowa 1) open seasonally, until the end of September, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00–17:00. According to the 2026 price list, a standard ticket costs PLN 13, reduced PLN 9, family PLN 37, and children under 7 go free. A combined ticket with the open-air museum costs PLN 36 (reduced PLN 23). Outside the season you can see the building from outside.

Allow 30–45 minutes for the church and Mrongowiusz House. Combine them with a walk around the market square and a visit to the open-air museum at ul. Leśna 23, one of Olsztynek's main attractions.
