Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek

The Olsztynek Open-Air Museum (say "ol-SHTIN-ek"), officially the Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park, is one of the oldest and largest skansens (open-air museums) in Poland. Spread over about 77 hectares in the Warmia-Masuria lake region, it gathers dozens of historic wooden and brick buildings — farmhouses, windmills, a village inn, a church and barns — from the former East Prussia and Lithuania Minor. It is a great family day out and an easy stop right off the main Gdańsk–Warsaw expressway.

Where it is and how to get there

Olsztynek lies at the junction of the S7 expressway (Gdańsk–Warsaw) and the S51 to Olsztyn, about 30 km from Olsztyn, roughly 2 hours by car from Gdańsk and 2–2.5 hours from Warsaw. The nearest international airports are Gdańsk, Warsaw Chopin and Olsztyn-Mazury (Szymany). The museum is at ul. Leśna 23, on the edge of town, with paid parking on site.

A museum that moved from Königsberg

The collection began in 1909 as a village museum next to the zoo in Königsberg (today's Kaliningrad, Russia), founded by East Prussia's heritage conservator Richard Dethlefsen. In 1937–1942 it was moved to Olsztynek, then the German town of Hohenstein; about a dozen of the original buildings made the journey. After World War II the area became part of Poland, and Polish curators expanded the park with new buildings from the region. The Ethnographic Park opened on 1 September 1961 and became an independent museum in 1969.

What to see

• The church from Rychnowo (a 1909 replica) with a 17th-century triptych.
• Two windmills — a post mill from Wodziany dated 1773 and a paltrok-type mill from Ruska Wieś — plus a watermill from Kaborno.
• The inn from Skandawa, with folk art and painted furniture.
• The cottage from Gązwa with a tiled stove dated 1792, and a stone house from Łutynowo.
• Farm animals, including rare native breeds — horses, cows, goats, sheep and poultry are a hit with kids.

In the town center, the museum also runs an exhibition hall and the Mrongowiusz House, open June–September, Tuesday–Sunday.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026 the park is open daily: in October 8:30 am–4:30 pm; November–March (winter 2026/27) 10:00 am–3:00 pm, when tickets are sold by machine, museum guards or online; April–June and September 9:00 am–5:00 pm; July–August 10:00 am–6:00 pm.

Tickets for 2026: PLN 30 standard, PLN 19 reduced, PLN 80 family (2 adults + 2 children under 16); children under 7 free. Free-admission days remaining in October 2026 are the 14th, 22nd and 26th. Car parking costs PLN 10, even on free days. Guided tours are offered in Polish; information boards are partly multilingual.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes — especially with children or if you are interested in rural life and the German–Polish–Lithuanian heritage of this borderland. Allow 2–3 hours, or half a day with kids. Paths are partly grass and gravel, so wear comfortable shoes; an all-terrain stroller works better than a light one. Most of the museum is outdoors, so dress for the weather.

Nearby

The Grunwald battlefield, site of one of medieval Europe's largest battles (1410), is a short drive away. Olsztyn, with the castle where Nicolaus Copernicus once worked as an administrator, is half an hour north.
