Market Square in Olsztyn

Olsztyn's Old Town Market Square (Rynek Starego Miasta, pronounced roughly "OL-shtin") is the heart of the capital of Warmia and Masuria in northeastern Poland and the natural starting point for exploring the city's compact old town. A red-brick Old Town Hall with colorful sundials stands in the middle, surrounded by arcaded houses, sgraffito facades and café terraces. A few minutes away are the High Gate, St. James's Cathedral and the castle where Nicolaus Copernicus once lived and worked.

Where it is and how to get there

Olsztyn lies about 210 km north of Warsaw and is the main gateway to the Masurian Lake District. The nearest airport is Olsztyn-Mazury in Szymany, roughly 60 km south, while Warsaw and Gdańsk airports are the main international options. The old town is pedestrianized: park in the city center and walk, or take a bus to the stops near Jedności Słowiańskiej Square (north side) or Grunwaldzka Street (south side).

History: from medieval market to postwar rebuild

The square dates back to the 14th century, when Olsztyn (German: Allenstein) received its town charter in 1353. For centuries it was the main marketplace – trading even took place inside the town hall and its cellars. Fire destroyed the town hall and much of the town in 1620; it was rebuilt by 1624 and later enlarged. In 1915 the city government moved to the New Town Hall.

The defining moment came in February 1945, when advancing Soviet troops burned most of the houses around the square. The postwar rebuild of the 1950s did not copy the prewar look: the new houses received Renaissance- and Baroque-inspired facades with arcades, sgraffito and reliefs. The Old Town Hall itself was rebuilt in 1946–1949 and restored again in 2003 for the town's 650th anniversary, when Gothic details were uncovered and its turret was recreated.

• Old Town Hall, home of the Provincial Public Library since 1996; look for the sundials on its corners.
• The Mayor's House, with Gothic arcades, first mentioned in 1507 and traditionally regarded as the square's most important house.
• Arcaded frontages in pastel colors, including the Staromiejska restaurant, open since 1958.
• A modern fountain and an open-air stage used for summer concerts and fairs.

Visiting tips

The square is open 24/7 and free (as of October 2026). Allow 20–30 minutes for the square itself and 2–3 hours for the whole old town including the castle museum. The cobbled surface is flat but uneven in places – manageable with a stroller. The town hall cellars are closed to visitors. Restaurant menus around the square often include English; payment is in Polish złoty (PLN), and cards are widely accepted.

Is it worth visiting? What's nearby

If you are heading to the Masurian lakes, Olsztyn's old town is well worth a half-day stop. Walk up Staromiejska Street to the Gothic High Gate, visit St. James's Cathedral just east of the square, and head west to the Castle of the Warmian Chapter (Museum of Warmia and Masuria), where Copernicus served as administrator from 1516 to 1521. Finish with a stroll along the Łyna River, which loops around the old town.
