Co-cathedral Basilica of St James the Apostle in Olsztyn

The Co-cathedral Basilica of St James the Apostle in Olsztyn is the city’s oldest surviving sacred monument and one of the symbols of its Old Town. The red-brick, three-aisled church was built around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, and its tower reaches about 70 metres. It is an excellent stop for visitors interested in Brick Gothic, organ music and the history of Warmia.

Gothic form and history

The church was built over decades as Olsztyn developed. The square tower received its present seven-storey form at the end of the 16th century, and two chapels were added beside it in 1721. After damage in the early 19th century, the vault collapsed; rebuilding and later repairs left visible traces of several periods inside the church.

What to see inside

Look for the medieval tabernacle with Renaissance painted decoration, a Gothic grille, the 17th-century marble baptismal font, Baroque sculptures and late-Gothic benches transferred from Braniewo. Different types of vaulting survive in the interior, while the restored organ recalls the church’s connection with composer Feliks Nowowiejski. The Olsztyn Organ Concerts have been held here since 1979.

Visiting and practical tips

The church is active and can be visited outside services; check parish notices before entering. It became a co-cathedral in 1973, an archcathedral in 1992 and a minor basilica in 2004. The cathedral is at 12 Staszica Street, making it easy to combine with the market square, castle and a walk through central Olsztyn.
