Landmarks
Olsztyn, Warmian-Masurian
The High Gate in Olsztyn (Polish: Wysoka Brama, "VIH-so-kah BRAH-mah"), historically called the Upper Gate, is a 14th-century Gothic town gate and the classic entrance to the Old Town of this lakeside city in northeastern Poland. It is the only survivor of the three gates that once pierced Olsztyn's medieval walls. You walk straight through it from the tram stop to the market square, so it is the natural first stop on any list of things to do in Olsztyn.
The gate dates from the town's second founding charter of May 4, 1378, which set Olsztyn's northern boundary. What you see today was most likely rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, after wars between Poland and the Teutonic Knights damaged the town.
Over the centuries the building was put to many uses:
In 2012, archaeologists uncovered the stone foundations of an outer fortification from 1378 just north of the gate, probably a barbican or round bastion, along with about 140 cannonballs. The open excavation became a long-running local debate; in 2025 the city said it planned to secure and fill it in once funding came through.
The four-story brick tower has an extra level in its roof, a gabled roof and distinctive stepped gables, with a lower annex on the east side. Look out for:
For the best photo, stand on Staromiejska Street early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
As of October 2026:
Olsztyn is about 210 km (130 mi) north of Warsaw; direct trains take roughly 2.5–3 hours, and Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Szymany is about an hour's drive away. In town, the "Wysoka Brama" tram and bus stop is right next to the gate, reachable by public transport from the main railway station (check the local ZDZiT timetable). Drivers should use paid downtown parking, since much of the Old Town is pedestrianized. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN).
Within a few minutes' walk you will find the Old Town market square and Old Town Hall, St. James's Cathedral and the Warmian Chapter Castle, closed for restoration from September 2026 but still worth seeing from outside. The Mendelsohn House lies a little west of the Old Town, and in summer Lake Ukiel is a short ride away.
