Things to do in Olsztyn

Olsztyn is the capital of Warmia and Masuria, set on the Łyna River in the Olsztyn Lake District. A dozen or so lakes and a large city forest lie within its limits, so sightseeing combines easily with relaxation. The main monument is the Gothic Castle of the Warmian Chapter, where Nicolaus Copernicus lived from 1516 to 1521 as administrator of the chapter's estates and where his astronomical table survives. Enter the Old Town through the High Gate, cross the Market Square and continue to St James Cathedral. Visit the Mendelsohn House, a former Jewish pre-burial house now used for cultural events. In summer relax at Lake Ukiel with its beach and cycle paths, and in the evening visit the Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory. Plan one to two days. Arrive by train, via the S51 expressway or at Olsztyn-Mazury Airport in Szymany. May to September is best.
