Gietrzwałd, Warmian-Masurian
The Gietrzwałd Marian Shrine (gyet-ZHVAHLD) is the only site in Poland where Marian apparitions have been officially approved by the Catholic Church. In the summer of 1877 two girls reported seeing the Virgin Mary here, and today pilgrims from across Poland and abroad visit the neo-Gothic basilica with its venerated painting. If you are looking for things to do near Olsztyn, or a place that links religious history with the story of the Prussian-era borderlands, plan a calm half-day stop with the basilica, the spring and a stroll through the village.
Gietrzwałd is a village in the historic region of Warmia, in the south of the Warmian-Masurian region, about 20 km from Olsztyn. By car from Olsztyn it takes roughly 20-30 minutes (approximate). The nearest major airports are Gdańsk and Olsztyn-Mazury. In German the village is called Dietrichswalde, the name you will see in older books and on pre-war maps.
From 27 June to 16 September 1877, two girls from the village, 13-year-old Justyna Szafryńska and 12-year-old Barbara Samulowska, reported seeing the Virgin Mary. According to accounts, this took place when Prussian authorities restricted the use of Polish in Warmia. The Church recognized the content of the apparitions as authentic in 1977, a hundred years later, and they remain the only Polish apparitions with that recognition.
The first documented church was consecrated on 31 March 1500 as a Gothic building and later remodeled in the Renaissance style. The painting of the Virgin has stood on the high altar since at least 1505. The church was enlarged in 1863-1869 and again in 1878-1884. The second stage, designed by Arnold Güldenpfennig, gave it its present North German brick Gothic look: a cross plan, a tower with a clock and three bells, and a neo-Gothic interior. Pope Paul VI made it a minor basilica on 2 February 1970. The Canons Regular of St. John Lateran have looked after the shrine since 1945.
The central object is a painting of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd of the Hodegetria type, showing Mary pointing to Christ, kept on the high altar. For a long time its cult was local, and after the apparitions it became known across the country. The painting was crowned in 1967. Look up in the nave: the vault carries a painted Marian decoration, and the whole interior is neo-Gothic.
Allow 30-45 minutes for the basilica, or 2-3 hours with the spring and a walk. In summer and on feast days arrive early in the morning.
The shrine is mainly a pilgrimage destination, but it is also worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Warmia, neo-Gothic brick architecture or quiet places away from the main routes. With children, choose a time outside Mass and feast days, when the church is calm and a walk is not limited by crowds. It is quietest on weekdays outside the pilgrimage season, and busiest in summer and on feast days. Dress modestly, and do not photograph the interior during services.
The main days are the anniversary of the apparitions on 27 June and the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 September. According to the shrine's website, the 149th anniversary was celebrated in 2026 and the 150th anniversary is planned for 2027, so expect larger crowds then. August celebrations around the Assumption have their own dates, which the site does not list for 2026.
The official website gives Mass and devotion times. Weekday Masses are at 7:00, 12:00 and 18:00; on Sundays and holidays at 7:00, 9:00, 11:00, 16:00 and 18:00, with an extra Sunday Mass at 14:00 from 1 May to 16 September. In the same period there is adoration at 20:30 and the Marian Appeal at 21:00. Opening hours outside services are not published. Entry is free. The entrance address is ul. Kościelna 4, 11-036 Gietrzwałd. Phone: +48 89 512 31 02 or +48 89 512 34 07, email biuro@sanktuariummaryjne.pl. Pilgrim groups register at +48 89 512 31 02, extension 210. Information in English is not guaranteed on site. Check wheelchair access with the shrine before you visit.
Driving from Olsztyn is the easiest option. For public transport, check current timetables of regional operators. We found no parking information on the official site, and on feast days spaces fill quickly.
Olsztyn, with its cathedral and the chapter castle, is close. Pilgrims often combine Gietrzwałd with Święta Lipka (Holy Linden), about 70 km away. In the region you can also visit the collegiate church in Dobre Miasto and the church in Orneta.
