Szyb Wilson Gallery in Katowice

The Szyb Wilson Gallery is at 1 Oswobodzenia Street in Katowice, on the edge of Janów, Nikiszowiec and Szopienice. It occupies historic buildings of the former “Wieczorek” mine shaft, whose history dates back to 1826. According to the venue, it is Poland’s largest private art gallery, with around 2,500 m² of exhibition space. A visit combines contemporary art with Upper Silesia’s industrial heritage.

The gallery has three spaces: the Small, Medium and Large Galleries. Its programme includes painting, graphics, photography, sculpture, installations and performance art; temporary exhibitions change, so check the programme before visiting. It supports young artists from Poland and abroad and hosts events including the recurring Art Naif Festival.

The history of the building

The gallery buildings date from 1918 and were designed by cousins Emil and Georg Zillmann, also known for Nikiszowiec. After Szyb Wilson closed in 1995, the interiors were adapted for contemporary art. The high, raw rooms of the former lamp room and bathhouse are part of the experience, not merely a backdrop.

Hours and access

Admission is free, and the gallery is open daily 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Guided visits and assistance for visitors with disabilities are available Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., after prior contact. Free parking, including space for coaches, is available on site. Buses 30, 76, 108, 109, 920 and 930 serve the area. Combine the visit with Nikiszowiec.
