Nature
Katowice, Silesian
The Valley of Three Ponds (Dolina Trzech Stawów, say "DOH-lee-na TSHEH-kh STAH-voof") is Katowice's biggest green escape close to downtown: a park of lakes, woodland, bike paths and skating trails just south of the city center. Locals come here to run, cycle, kayak and swim in summer, and every August the valley hosts OFF Festival, one of Poland's best-known alternative music festivals. It is a great place to unwind after sightseeing.
The park lies in the Osiedle Paderewskiego-Muchowiec district of Katowice, about 2–3 km (1.5–2 miles) south of the Market Square, along Murckowska and Pszczyńska streets. City buses stop along those roads (check Jakdojade or Google Maps), and there is a city bike-share station in the park. Drivers can use the parking areas by the entrances on Murckowska Street and near Muchowiec airfield.
Katowice itself is about 80 km (50 miles) west of Kraków – around an hour by train – and Katowice Airport (Pyrzowice) is about 30 km north.
Despite the name, there are now 11 artificial lakes covering more than 35 hectares, within a park of about 65 hectares (160 acres). They began in the 19th century as subsidence hollows caused by underground coal mining at the Ferdinand mine; dams were later built to store water for the mine. A swimming club used the water as early as 1912, the current name appeared in 1933, and in the 1960s the area was planted with trees and became part of the Katowice Forest Park. It is a good example of how Upper Silesia has turned its mining scars into green spaces.
For more than a decade the valley has been the home of OFF Festival, curated by musician Artur Rojek and known for indie, rock and electronic lineups. The 2026 edition took place on August 7–9. During the festival part of the park is fenced off and ticketed.
It is worth it if you want fresh air, a run or a family afternoon; it is not a "sight" in the classic sense. Entry is free, and the park is open 24/7, all year. Summer facilities such as the beach, some rentals and cafés are seasonal, so in winter expect mainly quiet walks on snowy paths – and never step onto the frozen ponds. Most paths are flat and paved, suitable for strollers. Allow 1–2 hours for a walk, or half a day with a bike or skates.
