Christmas market in Katowice

The Katowice Christmas Market (Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy, roughly "YAR-mark bo-zho-na-ro-dze-NYO-vih") transforms the Main Square of Katowice, the capital of Poland's Silesia region, into a glowing winter village of wooden stalls, Ferris wheels, carousels and an ice rink. It's one of the biggest Christmas markets in southern Poland, free to enter, and far less crowded with international tourists than Kraków's. Expect mulled wine, gingerbread and hearty Silesian food under the lights.

Where is Katowice?

Katowice is the main city of the Upper Silesian metropolitan area in southern Poland, about 80 km (50 miles) west of Kraków – roughly an hour by train. Katowice Airport (Pyrzowice) serves many European routes, and Kraków Airport is another option. The market fills the Rynek, the city's central square, between the Skarbek department store and the Silesian Theater, just a few minutes' walk from Katowice's main railway station.

2026 dates and opening hours

According to the city's Cultural Information Point (PIK), the 2026/2027 market runs from Friday, November 20, 2026, to Wednesday, January 6, 2027. Announced hours (as of October 2026):

• Monday–Thursday: 10 a.m.–8 p.m.
• Friday–Sunday: 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
• Food zone: 10 a.m.–10 p.m., some stalls until midnight
• December 24: 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; December 25–26: 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
• December 31: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. (some stalls until 2 a.m.); January 1: noon–8 p.m.
• Ice rink: daily 9 a.m.–9 p.m.

What to expect

The organizer lists these attractions for 2026:

• Mega Młyn, a large Ferris wheel with views over the whole market (about 33 m tall in 2025), plus the smaller Śląski Młyn ("Silesian Wheel")
• a carousel, an electric train and interactive fairy-tale huts for kids
• a Santa Claus parade
• Sfera Bar, a heated dome where you can warm up with a drink

In previous seasons, around 100 wooden stalls sold handicrafts, ornaments, sweets and regional food; the 2024/2025 edition had more than 100. Look out for Silesian specialties alongside Polish Christmas classics. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN); it's worth carrying a little cash for smaller stalls.

Tips for your visit

• Come after dark, around 4 p.m. in December, when the illuminations switch on.
• Weekends, especially in early December, get very busy; weekday afternoons are calmer.
• Allow 1–2 hours for the market, more if you skate or ride the Ferris wheel.
• Skip the car: parking in the center is tight in December, and the station is right next door.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – especially if you want a big, festive market with a local feel and lower prices than in Western Europe. Make a day of it: Katowice's Culture Zone, built on a former coal mine site, combines the Silesian Museum, the Spodek arena and the striking concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR). Nikiszowiec, a historic red-brick miners' estate a short ride from the center, usually hosts its own atmospheric Christmas market too.
