Katowice, Silesian
Giszowiec (say "gee-SHOH-vyets") is a historic garden-city estate in Katowice, built in the early 1900s for coal miners and their families. Instead of tenement blocks, it has whitewashed cottages with steep red roofs, private gardens and tree-lined lanes – a rare idealistic experiment in company housing. Two-thirds of it was demolished under communism, but the surviving core around Pod Lipami Square is one of the most charming corners of Upper Silesia.
Giszowiec is a district in the southeast of Katowice, southern Poland, a few miles from downtown. Katowice is about 80 km (50 miles) west of Kraków, roughly an hour by train, and Katowice Airport is about 30 km north of the city. City buses run from the center (check the Jakdojade app or Google Maps for current routes), and there is parking by Pod Lipami Square. The famous red-brick estate of Nikiszowiec is only about 2–3 km away, so the two make an easy half-day combination.
The estate was founded on July 1, 1907, by Anton Uthemann, director of the Giesche mine, and designed by Georg and Emil Zillmann, the cousins who later built Nikiszowiec. Construction finished in 1910. In German it was called Gieschewald.
Inspired by the English garden-city movement and traditional Silesian village houses, the Zillmanns gave each family a house and garden, with schools, a department store, a post office, an inn, a bathhouse and a forester's lodge around the central square.
In the 1970s, roughly two-thirds of the estate was torn down to make way for apartment blocks for the Staszic mine. Heritage rulings in 1978 and 1987 saved the rest. Director Kazimierz Kutz told the story of the demolition in his film "The Beads of One Rosary". Today Giszowiec is part of the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Region.
Yes, if you are interested in architecture, social history or simply want a quiet, leafy walk away from the city center. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the estate. Remember that the houses are private homes, so admire them from the street.
Visiting the Silesian Room (as of October 2026): visits must be booked by phone with the local youth culture center (MDK), tel. +48 32 206 46 42; tickets cost 8 PLN (reduced 4 PLN). A guide for the estate can also be arranged. Booking well ahead is recommended for weekends, and you may need some Polish – or ask your hotel to call. Walking around the estate itself is free.
