Elbląg was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1237 and became a Hanseatic port on the river of the same name. Its Old Town, once lined with more than 600 merchants' houses, was reduced to rubble in early 1945 and left empty for decades. Since 1983 it has been rebuilt in an unusual way: new houses stand on the original plots and cellars, echoing the old gables rather than copying them — a project often cited as a landmark of Polish postmodern architecture. Beech-covered hills rise on the city's eastern edge, and to the south begins the Elbląg Canal, where boats are hauled overland on rails.
Below you'll find our nine picks for a first visit, a one-day walking route, a two-day plan with a drive to Kadyny and Frombork (or a canal cruise in season), how to get here and the full list of Elbląg attractions on tripto.pl. Opening hours and prices are on each attraction page. In winter the cathedral viewing terrace is closed and no canal cruises run.
Our picks for a first visit — each with a short reason why.

By air: The nearest airport is Gdańsk, about an hour's drive away. Without a car, get to a Gdańsk railway station and take the train on to Elbląg.
By train: Elbląg is on the line from Gdańsk to Olsztyn. From Gdańsk Główny the journey usually takes from about 50 minutes (Intercity) to about 1.5 hours (regional trains). The Old Town is a 15–20 minute walk from the station.
By car: From Gdańsk take the S7 expressway (about 60 km); Olsztyn is about 95 km. The Old Town is compact — park on its edge; there is a free car park below the castle site at Zamkowa 3–5.
Getting around: The Old Town, riverside, museum and Galeria EL are all walkable. City buses reach Bażantarnia (3–4 km) and Modrzewie Park. For Kadyny and Frombork a car or bike on road 503 is easiest; Frombork has no regular passenger trains, only buses from Elbląg.
May to September is when the cathedral terrace opens (in 2026: 1 May–30 September, Tue–Fri 10–17, Sat 10–14, Sun 14–17) and the museum keeps longer hours (1 June–30 September, Tue–Sun 11:00–17:30). The canal's inclined planes operated from 25 April to 4 October in 2026; the operator will announce the 2027 season. Spring and October are the best times for the beech woods. The city holds Elbląg Days in June, a Bread Festival in August and a Christmas market in the Old Town in December.
Winter 2026/27: no cathedral terrace and no canal cruises — the inclined planes can be viewed from outside only. The Archaeological and Historical Museum opens Tue–Sun 9:00–15:30 from 1 October to 31 May (last tickets 15:00). Galeria EL was open daily 10:00–17:00 in October 2026. The Market Gate is exterior-only in winter; check with the tourist information office at Stary Rynek 25.
Frombork in winter: since 15 December 2025 the Copernicus Museum's main building and the Copernicus Tower have been closed while the European Copernicus Centre is built. From 1 October 2026 the planetarium is open daily 9:00–16:00 and the ticket office at the South Gate 9:00–15:20.
Mondays: the Elbląg museum is closed. Galeria EL, the Old Town, the riverside, Bażantarnia and the Frombork planetarium are good alternatives.
One day covers the Old Town and Market Gate, the cathedral, the Archaeological and Historical Museum, Galeria EL and the riverside. Add a second day for Kadyny and Frombork or, between spring and early autumn, a cruise on the Elbląg Canal.
Yes. Trains from Gdańsk Główny take roughly 50 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the service, and the drive on the S7 is about 60 km. A day is enough for the Old Town, cathedral and museum.
Only in season. In 2026 the inclined planes operated from 25 April to 4 October; the classic Elbląg–Buczyniec cruise takes about 4.5 hours. There are no cruises in winter 2026/27, but you can see the inclined planes from land.
In season only. In 2026 the terrace opened from 1 May to 30 September, with tickets at 20 zł (10 zł reduced). It is closed from October to the end of April.
