St Nicholas Cathedral in Elbląg

St. Nicholas Cathedral in Elbląg (say "EL-blonk") is a Gothic brick church whose 97-meter tower is the tallest church spire east of the Vistula River and the landmark you will see first as you approach this northern Polish city. Standing at the edge of Elbląg's rebuilt Old Town, it has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Elbląg since 1992. In summer you can climb to a viewing terrace for one of the best panoramas in the region, reaching over the Vistula Lagoon and the wooded Elbląg Upland.

Where is Elbląg and how to get there

Elbląg lies in the Warmia-Masuria region, about 60 km (roughly an hour's drive) southeast of Gdańsk via the S7 expressway. Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is the nearest international airport, around an hour away by car. Trains run to Elbląg station from Gdańsk and Malbork; from the station it is a walk of about fifteen minutes to the Old Town. Many visitors combine Elbląg with Malbork Castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) or a boat trip on the Elbląg Canal.

A church shaped by fire and war

Elbląg was founded by the Teutonic Order in 1237 and became a prosperous Hanseatic port, and St. Nicholas was its main parish church; a priest is first recorded here in 1246. The brick hall was built in stages through the late 13th and 14th centuries, briefly took basilica form, and by the late 15th century returned to the three-aisled hall layout with octagonal pillars that you see today.

Twice the church was nearly lost. On April 26, 1777, lightning struck the tower: the towers and roof burned and the Gothic vaults collapsed. The town could only afford a reduced repair, lowering the walls by more than 6.5 meters. The present neo-Gothic tower dates from 1906–1907. Then, in February 1945, the church burned out completely when the Red Army captured the city. Clearing the ruins began in 1948 and reconstruction is considered complete as of 1965, with new stained glass added until 1989.

What to see inside

• A bronze baptismal font from 1387, cast by master Bernhuser – the church's greatest treasure.
• Late Gothic altarpieces funded by medieval guilds such as Vistula raftsmen, maltsters and shoemakers' journeymen, several of them brought from other Elbląg churches.
• Carved wooden apostles, a monumental crucifix and a large Gothic statue of St. Nicholas.
• A relic of the Holy Cross; the church has been a shrine since 2000.
• The chair used by Pope John Paul II during his 1999 visit.

Outside, look closely at the brick walls: in 1992 researchers counted 1,054 small drilled hollows, so-called "fire drills," probably more than on any other building in Poland.

Climbing the tower: tickets and opening hours

The viewing terrace opened in 2016. It sits at about 68 meters, reached by more than 360 steps in 15–20 minutes, with a seating area halfway up. On a clear day you can see the Vistula Spit and Lake Druzno; the city's guide says even Malbork Castle. Tickets are sold inside the cathedral; the tower is run by the city's Archaeological and Historical Museum.

As of October 2026:

• Season: May 1 – September 30; Tue–Fri 10 am–5 pm, Sat 10 am–2 pm, Sun 2–5 pm, closed Mondays; last entry 30 minutes before closing.
• Tickets: 20 PLN (Polish zloty) adults, 10 PLN reduced, free for children under 4.
• Winter 2026/27: the terrace is closed from October through April. Check the museum website for 2027 hours before planning a climb.

The narrow staircase is not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or anyone with limited mobility.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are already heading to Malbork or the canal. Allow 20–30 minutes for the interior and about an hour if you climb the tower. This is an active cathedral with Masses on Sundays at 7, 8:30, 10, 11:30 am, 1 and 6 pm, and on weekdays at 7, 8:30 am and 6 pm; avoid sightseeing during services. Information is mostly in Polish, so a translation app helps.

Right next to the cathedral is the Church Path, a narrow medieval passage with Gothic brick arches. Within a few minutes' walk you will find the Market Gate, the Galeria EL contemporary art center in a former Dominican church, the Archaeological and Historical Museum and the riverside promenade where canal cruises depart in season.
