St Nicholas Cathedral in Elbląg

St Nicholas Cathedral in Elbląg is a Gothic church in the heart of the city’s old town and one of Elbląg’s most recognisable landmarks. Its tower is 97 metres high,. It is the principal church of the Diocese of Elbląg, established in 1992, as well as an active parish church.

History and architecture

The first church on this site was built around 1240. Over the following centuries it was enlarged, including major work in 1330–1380, when it received the form of a Gothic basilica and later a hall church. In 1598 the central tower received a Renaissance cupola. Lightning caused a major fire in 1777, destroying almost the entire building; later rebuilding and post-war reconstruction shaped the cathedral seen today.

Viewing terrace and interior

The main tourist attraction is the viewing terrace on the tower, about 85 metres above ground. In the 2026 season it is open from 1 May to 30 September: Tuesday to Friday 10:00–17:00, Saturday 10:00–14:00 and Sunday 14:00–17:00; it is closed on Mondays. The terrace requires a paid ticket, and the last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Inside, look for the Gothic presbytery and furnishings recalling Elbląg’s Hanseatic past.

Practical planning

The cathedral stands at 18 Mostowa Street, beside the rebuilt old town. Access to the interior follows the liturgical schedule, so check current parish notices and the Archaeological and Historical Museum’s separate information about the tower before travelling. Combine the terrace with a walk through the old town and along the Elbląg River.
