Promenade in Elbląg

Elbląg’s promenade is best understood as a pedestrian route through the Old Town: the Old Market Square, rebuilt townhouses, the Church Path and the area around the Market Gate. The name does not refer to one fenced or separate avenue; treat it as a walk through the historic centre, whose modern buildings form the so-called New Old Town. The flat route suits families and short walks.

Retroversion, not reconstruction

Elbląg’s Old Town suffered severe destruction in 1945. Rebuilding began only in the 1980s, preserving the medieval street plan and historic plot boundaries. New townhouses echo former building shapes, arcades and details without copying them exactly. This approach is known as retroversion and is the most distinctive feature of a walk through the old town.

What to see along the way

Start at the Old Market Square and walk towards the Market Gate, where the figure of the Little Baker Boy stands. Nearby are the Gothic St Nicholas Cathedral, the distinctive Church Path and the EL Art Gallery. You can extend the route to the Archaeological and Historical Museum, Spichrzów Island and the riverside boulevard along the Elbląg River.

Practical information

The promenade and Old Town streets are free to enter and accessible around the clock. Allow 2–3 hours for the main sights, plus more time in summer for outdoor dining. During the tourist season, maps and event information are available at the Tourist Information office in the Old Town Hall. Check the city calendar, as fairs and concerts can temporarily change traffic arrangements.
