Museums
Frombork, Warmian-Masurian
The Nicolaus Copernicus Museum in Frombork is a regional museum, founded in 1948, devoted to the astronomer who lived in this small town on the Vistula Lagoon for nearly three decades. It is not a single building but a group of sites: the former Bishop's Palace and Copernicus Tower on Cathedral Hill, a planetarium in the Radziejowski Tower, the medieval Holy Spirit Hospital with a history of medicine exhibition, and an Astronomical Park outside town. Some are closed for renovation in winter 2026/27, so plan ahead.
Frombork (roughly "FROM-bork"; German: Frauenburg) lies in northern Poland, about 35 km northeast of Elbląg and roughly 100 km (about 1.5 hours by car) from Gdańsk, the nearest international airport. The scenic route follows road 503 along the lagoon through Kadyny. There is no regular train service to Frombork, so without a car you will depend on regional buses from Elbląg or Braniewo.
Since December 15, 2025, the museum's main building in the former Bishop's Palace has been closed to visitors, and so has Copernicus Tower. Both are part of the European Copernicus Centre project, worth about 93.7 million PLN (around 71.8 million PLN from EU funds), which is renovating five historic buildings on Cathedral Hill and building a new library and collections store. No reopening date has been announced.
Three sites remain open, and they make a good half-day visit:

Yes, with the right expectations. The main Copernicus exhibition is closed, but you can still combine a planetarium show, a walk on Cathedral Hill, the cathedral where Copernicus is buried and the atmospheric Holy Spirit Hospital. Note that the hospital is closed on Mondays and the Astronomical Park opens only Friday to Sunday, so a weekend visit gives you the most options. Allow two to three hours for the town-center sites, plus an evening at the Astronomical Park if the sky is clear.
