Braniewo, Warmian-Masurian
St. Catherine's Basilica in Braniewo (bra-NYEH-vo) is a monumental Gothic hall church with a 63 m tower, blown up in 1945 and rebuilt from ruins between 1979 and 1986. Today it is a minor basilica and a Fatima shrine, and its brick tower is the landmark of this Warmian town. If you are asking what to see in Braniewo, the church tells the story of Gothic architecture, war and postwar reconstruction in one stop.
Braniewo, known in German as Braunsberg, lies in the north of Warmia, close to the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region. It is on the Olsztyn-Braniewo railway line (check timetables). From Gdańsk it is roughly an hour and a half by car (approximate), and Gdańsk is also the nearest big airport. About 25 km away is Frombork, the town linked with Nicolaus Copernicus.
The chancel was begun in 1343 or 1346 and the nave in 1350, and the vault was completed in 1442. In 1500 Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode funded a music gallery. The tower was raised in 1536, and in 1855-1859 the church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. In early 1945 German forces blew up the tower, and most of the church and its vaults were destroyed.
The ruins stood for years until efforts by the bishops of Warmia returned them to the diocese. Reconstruction began in 1979 under Father Tadeusz Brandys. The first Mass was celebrated in 1981 and the church was consecrated in 1986. John Paul II named it a minor basilica in 2001.
Allow 30-45 minutes for the church, or about 90 minutes with a walk around town.
This is a working parish church, so visit outside services and dress modestly. We could not find the parish website, so sightseeing hours, Mass times and tower access are unconfirmed: phone the parish office or ask at the tourist information point. Entry to churches in Poland is normally free, but this is not officially confirmed here. The organ was blessed on 25 November 2017 during the feast-day celebrations, and concerts are a good way to hear it. We could not confirm English signs on site.
Driving is easiest. A railway station is on the Olsztyn-Braniewo line. Parking at the basilica is not confirmed; photographs show cars parked in front of the church. Prices in town are in Polish zloty (PLN).
Frombork with its cathedral hill is about 25 km away. In Braniewo itself there is a separate Gate Tower, where a tourist information point and an observation terrace were planned; its current status is unconfirmed.
