Orneta, Warmian-Masurian
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Orneta (or-NEH-ta) is a Gothic brick basilica with a 45 m tower, and it is one of the finest churches in the historic region of Warmia in northern Poland. Built of red brick, it stands out for its decorative frieze of glazed brick, star vaults and a baroque high altar from 1744. If you are searching for things to do in Orneta, or wondering whether this small town is worth a stop, the church is the reason to come.
Orneta lies in Warmia, in the northern part of the Warmian-Masurian region, about 25 km from Lidzbark Warmiński. The nearest large city is Olsztyn, roughly an hour by car (approximate), and the nearest airports are Gdańsk and Olsztyn-Mazury. During the Prussian era the town was known by its German name Wormditt. It is a quiet place, far from the main tourist routes.
Construction began in the 1340s under Bishop Herman of Prague, who had made Orneta castle his seat. The church was consecrated in 1379 and reconsecrated in 1494, when it received the double dedication to John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. Side chapels were added from the late 14th century, and eight are visible today. A fire in 1730 destroyed the interior, and the rebuilding gave it a baroque character. Renovations took place in 1525 and from 1889 to 1909.
It is a Gothic basilica with three naves and four bays, no separate chancel, and a west tower about 45 m high. The outer walls are decorated with a frieze of glazed brick showing relief heads and plant motifs. Inside, star vaults cover the naves, and fragments of wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries survive, partly completed in the early 20th century.
Highlights include:
Walk around the outside first to see the frieze and gables, then step inside. Allow 30-45 minutes, or about 90 minutes with the market square and a stroll around town. This is a working parish church, so visit outside services and dress modestly.
We could not find the parish website, so official sightseeing hours and Mass times are unconfirmed. Ask at the parish office or check notices at the entrance. Entry to churches in Poland is normally free, but this is not officially confirmed here. Tower access and organ concerts are also unconfirmed. Do not expect English signs or guides.
Driving is easiest. A car park in the town centre is likely, but its exact location and any fees are not confirmed. Prices in the area are in Polish zloty (PLN).
In Lidzbark Warmiński you can see the castle of the Warmian bishops and the parish church, and in Dobre Miasto the collegiate church with its monastery buildings. Gietrzwałd and Święta Lipka are easy to add to a regional itinerary.
