Dobre Miasto, Warmian-Masurian
The Collegiate Basilica in Dobre Miasto (DOH-breh MYAH-sto, "Good Town") is a 14th-century Gothic complex and the second largest church in Warmia, northern Poland. A red-brick church with a tall tower stands inside a compact quadrangle of former canons' houses, and inside you find star vaults, a 15th-century Marian triptych and an organ with 49 stops. If you are asking whether Dobre Miasto is worth a stop, this is the reason to go, especially if you enjoy brick Gothic and quiet small-town Poland.
Dobre Miasto, known in German as Guttstadt, is a town of about 9,900 people on national road 51 between Olsztyn and Lidzbark Warmiński. From Olsztyn it is roughly a 30-minute drive (approximate), and the town has a station on the Braniewo-Olsztyn railway line. The nearest large airports are Gdańsk and Olsztyn-Mazury.
In 1347 the Warmian cathedral chapter moved to Dobre Miasto and took over the local parish church. The collegiate complex was built in 1357-1389, with work on the church beginning around 1359. The tower was finished in the early 16th century after delays caused by the Polish-Teutonic war. Fires in 1716 and 1719 damaged the roof and the west buildings, and the chapter was dissolved in 1810. In 1872-1882 the church was regothicized, which destroyed many artworks; of its 15 altars only five survive. Since 19 May 1989 it has been a minor basilica.
It is a hall church with three aisles and no separate chancel, about 60 by 25 m, with octagonal pillars and star vaults. The church forms the north side of a compact quadrangle surrounded by canons' houses, cloisters, remains of the former bishop's house and gates, including the Mill Gate in the south wing. The eastern gable, with its pointed blind arcades and pinnacles, is especially striking.
Allow about an hour for the church and cloisters, or two hours with the museum and a stroll through town.
This is a working church, so visit outside services. We could not confirm official opening hours for the church or the museum, nor ticket prices. A regional tourism listing gives the address ul. Orła Białego 30 and the phone +48 89 616 18 04, but it may be out of date, so call ahead. The website zbawiciel.eu, listed on Wikidata, is up for sale and is not the church's official site. Do not expect English signs; prices are in Polish zloty (PLN).
Dobre Miasto lies on national road 51, and the line from Olsztyn to Braniewo stops at the town. Parking at the church is not confirmed.
The town also has the Gothic Stork Tower, built into a fragment of the old walls. Lidzbark Warmiński with the bishops' castle lies to the north, and Gietrzwałd and Olsztyn to the south.
