Elbląg Canal

The Elbląg Canal (Kanał Elbląski, roughly "EL-blong") in northern Poland is one of the strangest waterways you can travel anywhere: on its northern stretch, boats leave the water, ride on rail-mounted cradles and are hauled across grassy hillsides. This 19th-century system of inclined planes still runs purely on water power and is listed as a Polish Historic Monument. A cruise "over the grass" is the main reason many visitors come to the Elbląg area, about an hour's drive east of Gdańsk.

Where it is and how to get there

The canal lies in the Warmian-Masurian region, between the old Hanseatic city of Elbląg and the lake district around Ostróda and Iława. Elbląg is roughly 60 km (about an hour by car) from Gdańsk on the S7 expressway, and Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) is the nearest international airport. Elbląg also has a railway station with connections from Gdańsk.

The cruises start either in Elbląg (ul. Wodna 1B, by the river in the Old Town) or at the Buczyniec inclined plane (Buczyniec 1A, Pasłęk district), about 10 km south of the small town of Pasłęk. The operator lists free parking at Buczyniec and at ul. Zamkowa 3–5 in Elbląg. If you don't have a car, starting in Elbląg is the easier option, because the return bus brings you back to where you started.

How the inclined planes work

The main route is 84.2 km long and drops about 99.5 m between the highest point and Lake Druzno near Elbląg. Four conventional locks handle the southern section, but the steep edge of the upland is crossed on five inclined planes: Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie and Całuny. Each one lifts or lowers boats between roughly 13.8 m (Całuny) and 24.2 m (Oleśnica).

A boat sails onto an underwater cradle, which is then pulled up the slope by a cable on rails. The cable drum is driven by a water wheel (a turbine at Całuny), fed by water flowing down from the upper canal level. There are no electric or diesel motors. According to the cruise operator, these are the only working devices of this type in the world. Buczyniec, the highest of the five, has a visible machine house and a small canal history exhibition.

A short history

Construction began on October 28, 1844, designed by the Prussian engineer Georg Jacob Steenke for King Frederick William IV. The first boat passed in 1860, freight traffic started in 1861 and the canal was formally opened in 1862. Its purpose was to connect the timber and farm country of the Prussian "Oberland" with the port of Elbląg (then Elbing).

After World War II the machinery was restored and passenger cruises resumed in 1948. The canal became a protected technical monument in 1978, was voted one of the "Seven Wonders of Poland" in a 2007 newspaper poll, and was declared a Historic Monument in 2011. All five inclined planes were rebuilt between 2011 and 2015, and boats returned on May 29, 2015.

Cruises, tickets and what to expect

Cruises through the inclined planes are run by Żegluga Ostródzko-Elbląska. The classic trip is Elbląg – Buczyniec (or the reverse):

• about 4.5 hours on board, through all five inclined planes,
• a stretch through the Lake Druzno nature reserve (Natura 2000, over 200 species of water birds),
• a return bus of about 45 minutes.

Shorter options include Buczyniec – Jelenie (about 2 hours, four planes) and Jelenie – Elbląg (about 2.5 hours). The double-deck boat has a toilet and a snack bar; there is no live guide, but an audio guide in English, Polish and German plays during the trip. Dogs (maximum three per boat) and bicycles (maximum ten) are allowed for a fee. Bring a windproof jacket for the open upper deck.

2026 prices for Elbląg – Buczyniec were 169 PLN (adult), 149 PLN (reduced: ages 8–26 with student ID, seniors 60+, people with disabilities) and 49 PLN for children under 8, plus 31 PLN for the return bus (18 PLN for children). Prices are in Polish złoty; 2027 rates may change. Book online or at the operator's offices in Elbląg, Ostróda or Buczyniec; in July and August, book ahead.

Opening season and winter visits (as of October 2026)

The inclined planes are seasonal. In 2026 they operated from April 25 to October 4, daily 8 am–7 pm, according to Polish Waters (Wody Polskie). There are no cruises in winter 2026/27; after the season the section between the planes is usually drained for maintenance. Check zegluga.com.pl in spring for the 2027 start date.

Is it worth visiting off-season? If you are already in Elbląg, yes: you can drive to Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie or Całuny and see the rails, cradles and machine houses from outside, free of charge. But for the full experience, plan your trip between late April and September.
