Museums
Elbląg, Warmian-Masurian
The Archaeological and Historical Museum in Elbląg (say "EL-blonk") is the city's main museum and one of the most rewarding archaeology museums in northern Poland. Housed in two historic buildings on the riverside grounds of the former Teutonic castle, it traces the region's story from the Goths and the Viking-age trading post of Truso to the first postwar decade. It is open year-round, which makes it a top pick in winter, when many sights in the area close.
Elbląg lies about 60 km (an hour's drive) southeast of Gdańsk on the S7 expressway; Gdańsk airport is the nearest international gateway, and trains link the city with Gdańsk and Malbork. The museum is at Bulwar Zygmunta Augusta 11, on the edge of the Old Town by the Elbląg River, a few minutes' walk from St. Nicholas Cathedral and about twenty minutes from the station.
The museum was founded on March 24, 1954. It stands on the outer bailey of the Teutonic Knights' castle, which the townspeople tore down in 1454 when they rose against the Order. Exhibitions fill two buildings:
In the courtyard you will find a reconstructed house from Truso, based on excavation results.
Look out for 15th-century spectacles with horn frames, considered among the oldest ever found in Europe, and a rare 15th-century gittern, a medieval stringed instrument.
As of October 2026:
Allow 2–2.5 hours for both buildings. The museum also runs the cathedral's viewing tower, which is open only from May to September.
Yes, especially for families and anyone curious about the Vikings and the Baltic trade; models, multimedia and the Truso house keep kids engaged. Afterward, stroll along the riverside promenade, visit Galeria EL in the former Dominican church, or in summer take a boat toward the Elbląg Canal and Lake Druzno, where Truso once stood.
