Galeria EL Art Center in Elbląg (Centrum Sztuki Galeria EL; say "EL-blonk") is a contemporary art gallery set inside a Gothic former Dominican church, one of the oldest buildings in this northern Polish city. Bare brick walls, historic epitaphs and old gravestones in the floor form the backdrop for experimental exhibitions. It is on the city's official top-five list of things to do in Elbląg, and its story, from postwar ruin to a landmark of Polish avant-garde art, is as compelling as the art itself.
Elbląg is about 60 km (an hour's drive) southeast of Gdańsk on the S7 expressway, with Gdańsk airport the nearest international gateway; trains run from Gdańsk via Malbork. The gallery sits at Kuśnierska 6 in the Old Town, roughly 100 m from the Market Gate and a few minutes' walk from St. Nicholas Cathedral.
Dominican friars from Kraków were granted land in Elbląg in 1238 by Hermann Balk, the Teutonic Order's provincial master, and began building around 1246–1248. Work stalled during the Prussian uprising (1260–1274), resumed after a town fire around 1288, and a second aisle followed in the 14th century. A fire in 1504 destroyed the nave and both gables; the rebuilt interior received intricate net vaults. The friars left in 1542, and as the Marienkirche the building served Lutheran worship until 1945, when it was burned out in the final months of World War II.
In 1961 the artist Gerard Kwiatkowski asked the city for the ruined church as a studio. The gallery's founding date is July 24, 1961, when he and Janusz Hankowski opened a joint exhibition here. Fame came with the Biennale of Spatial Forms (1965–1973), international open-air sessions that left metal sculptures across the city and drew recognition from UNESCO among others. After the first edition, the regional heritage office funded the church's restoration, completed in 1970.
Kwiatkowski moved to Germany in 1974, and the gallery was closed for renovation from 1976 to 1982. In 1988 it hosted Poland's first computer-art workshops. A jazz club once operated in the ruins, a tradition continued by the Jazzbląg festival.

The gallery's homepage lists opening days inconsistently, so it is worth confirming before you go.
Yes, even if contemporary art is not your passion: the building alone justifies a visit, and it is a great rainy-day or winter option, especially in winter 2026/27 when the cathedral tower terrace is closed. Allow 45–90 minutes. Combine it with the Old Town, the Archaeological and Historical Museum and the riverside promenade.
