Frombork, Warmian-Masurian
Frombork harbour is at once a fishing, yacht and passenger harbour, and the cathedral helps with navigation: a red light in a tower window on Cathedral Hill serves as the rear leading mark. From the quay you therefore see the same towers that appear on the town's postcards.
The sea harbour in Frombork was formally established in 1953. It is a base for the fishing fleet, has a small quay for yachts and a stop for passenger ships. In 1972 a new passenger and yacht basin was built west of the old one. The harbour has two breakwaters whose heads are painted in diagonal yellow and black stripes: the east one, 61 m long, ends in a red column with a gallery, and the west one, 91 m long, in a green one. Local fishing boats carry the registration FRO on their sides, and the infrastructure is managed by the Maritime Office in Gdynia.
In the season, usually from May to mid-September, boats leave Frombork for trips on the Vistula Lagoon, among others to Krynica Morska, and a water tram to Piaski also runs in season. Timetables and prices change every year, so check with the operator before your visit.
Fishing boats moor along the east quays, and in the south-west part of the basin is a small quay belonging to a yacht club. Passenger ships stand by the west breakwater head. The Water Tower gives a good view over the whole harbour, the pier and the open lagoon. The harbour is photogenic at any hour: in the evening the quay lights reflect in the water, and in summer after dusk rare noctilucent clouds can sometimes be seen.
Check the rules for access to individual quays on the spot, because the harbour is also a working place for fishermen and has a sea border crossing. From the Water Tower it is a few hundred metres to the harbour, and a few minutes more to the promenade and pier.
Climb the tower or walk the pier to see the harbour from above and from the water, then go down to the basin for the details: fishing boats with the letters FRO and the yellow-black breakwater heads.
