Frombork, Warmian-Masurian
The walk along the pier in Frombork leads about 300 metres out into the Vistula Lagoon, and since 2020 it begins on a new promenade with a renovated town beach. The pier was built in 1973, and after dark rows of lamps light up along its railings.
The pier was built in 1973, as part of the preparations for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus. Passenger ships once docked here, and in the 1990s yachts moored at it. Its length is quoted differently, from about 300 to about 380 metres. The promenade was opened on 8 August 2020. It is connected to the pier, the neglected town beach was renovated, and a recreation zone was added with a spot for kinesitherapy and street workout equipment. The project cost about PLN 3 million, around 80% of it from EU funds.
The promenade has light paving and lamps, and at night a line of lights shines along the pier above dark water. Photos also show a small pond next to the promenade, where trees and sky are reflected, and a lit building with a gabled roof. Across the lagoon runs the low shore of the Vistula Spit, and from the pier you can see Cathedral Hill. Photos from the pier show sunsets over the lagoon, so the evening light is good for photographers.
The promenade and pier are open to everyone, and no ticket is needed. The area is open and exposed, so it can be windy by the water even on warm days. The harbour is a short walk away, and the Water Tower is less than a kilometre from here.
Combine the pier walk with a visit to the harbour: the whole loop along the water takes 30 to 90 minutes. The Green Velo cycle route, the Copernicus Trail and the Pomeranian Way of St James all pass through Frombork, so the promenade is a good place to rest after a stage by bike or on foot.
